Ouch, thats horrible long distance mpg from a car like that

yeah it is an old skool auto as well, but I wasn't exactly cruising at 70mph though. On the M6 toll I was hitting 90 according to GPS speedo

Tank before last was 46.1mpg. Just filled up today and the last tank was 56.4mpg.
I'm hoping to eek an extra few out of it too.

It's an 08 A3 with Fox's favourite engine! Lol
1.9TDIe

I'm always thinking about changing my A3 2.0T for a diesel but driving my normal commute (about 20k a year) I get 38mpg ish, if the 1.9TDI only hits mid 50s it doesn't seem worth it.

I'd say mid 50's is the realistic limit for this car. To get it to 60 would mean driving like a nanny.

My record is 64mpg on a tank in my bluemotion golf I had before and that was a very leisurely motorway trip from barnsley to exeter and back.

Got another 2-3mpg improvement on a trip from Grotty to London and back by turning off the climate control for the whole trip. Good improvement.

Good AutoExpress article here: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/229776/the_mpg_mythbusters.html

Was experimenting with some of those AutoExpress tweaks. Apart from the climate control, accelerating up hills is a killer for fuel economy, even going up unavoidable shallow motorway inclines drops the mpg by about 10-15%. Experimented by building up speed downhill then coasting up inclines in neutral, but all the flipping in and out of gear and watching the mpg gauge was tedious beyond belief.

Their conclusions:

- Air-conditioning sucks mpg.
- Having the windows up or down slightly makes very little difference.
- A gay aerodynamic roofbox barely impacts on fuel used.
- Slowing down on the motorway will boost fuel economy dramatically but takes you ten times as long to get to your destination.
- Having fat people in the back kills fuels economy.

Depends on your use, as stated in the article:

“What’s also interesting is that when we were on the bowl, the difference in fuel use between the baseline run and with air-con on is virtually nothing. They were both around 39mpg.”

Or makes no difference at all, as I've found in several cars. Varies from car to car, mostly relates to the engine's displacement or output...

I get 39.9 from a Pug Boxer 2.4 tdi. Not tooo bad, that's a lot of mixed driving.

My GF's 1.6 Rover 25 is appallingly crap, something like 25mpg. I'd actually get better fuel economy from my parents e46 328i..which they're selling and which I might buy.

I'm averaging around 19-20 in my new Mazda 3 MPS mk2. Mostly town driving though, so would increase if doing motorway miles.

Knew what to expect though as previously had the 6 MPS which has the same engine.
