WhatsApp mandatory data sharing with Facebook

"However, the new version of the privacy policy for European users explicitly says that data can be shared with other Facebook companies to show personalised advertising and offers, make suggestions for content, and "help" to complete purchases, among other reasons."

So they will just obtain the same data via a 3rd party acting as middle man and not directly, wow what a victory for the EU in protecting peoples privacy. At least they were telling the truth when they said it would not be the same changes:

But Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, said European and UK users would not see the same data-sharing changes

Great use of linguistics.

Unless you are paying for an messaging app then what are people expecting if you use their services without a fee

I used to run chat servers, I never expected payment from users neither did I harvest data or get ad revenue, I just did it to create a service for people, I guess we running out of people like me.

I think I signed up for FB in the early 2000 but only used it a few times -= Not been on for 15yrs or more so will I have to agree on WhatsApp.
I only had WA because it used WiFi and I was on PAYG phone - now calls are free I could dump it but it would be pain to get rid of it.

That is the real problem here, facebook in this country has got a dominant hold on society. All my family use whatsapp, most of them are on facebook, covid relief groups are almost exclusively using facebook groups, I had to register on facebook back in the spring just to access covid support groups. The dominant selling market place is now facebook instead of ebay as well.

Not directly related but I read something in the news lately where google wants to remove 3rd party cookie functionality from the web, there is a massive outcry from the news agencies (anyone who uses online news sites might notice those sites are bombarded with trackers), google's reasoning is data collection has got out of hand, the news sites are saying if it goes live they lose 2/3 revenue. The magic question is what is so good about targeted advertising, an advert is an advert.

Obviously google are not a saint here, they started the whole thing off, and I am sure they have a new tech that will mean they are not affected, I expect their actual motivation is to have a stranglehold on the advertising market.

I just accepted it, I have a dead Facebook account that's completely empty but never got round to deleting. There's nothing there to farm.

Aside from the obvious issues associated with data mining I've found targeted advertising to be a complete disappointment.

On the web all it seems to do is shows adverts for products that you have previously looked at whereas on Facebook show adverts for things that I have absolutely no interest in.

What is my data worth if they cannot use it in a meaningful way?

Facebook only started in February of 2004 and was only opened up to general access (people outside of US colleges, schools and Universities elsewhere in 2006).

I created a profile in 2007 which was the year it seemed to really start getting traction in the UK outside of universities.

I haven't used Whatsapp for two days now, and I've just noticed that it's currently the largest user of my battery in the list. Currently sitting at 30% of total battery usage despite just being installed and not being used. Is anyone else getting this?
