With the imminent arrival of the impressive looking Xbox1 X and seeing the 4k Forza demo at E3, it's clear my r9 290 has just about run its course. Sadly I don't think it's a case of just upgrading my r9 290 as any newer high end GPU will be hamstrung by my FX8350 and measly 1333hz 8gb of RAM. So the way I see it i have a couple of options.

1- buy a new GPU to keep up with a console...and upgrade CPU/Mobo/RAM later (probably the 1600)
2- swallow my pride and stick with what I have until there's something with a bigger leap in performance for the money

I currently game on my 1080p 60hz TV but I would like to get a 4K TV in the new year too

If anyone has any more suggestions I'll be happy to hear them

I won't be buying until September/October anyway

don't even consider 4K gaming in your position.

if your not happy to:
a) constantly upgrade every 8 months for max settings
B) Run on Medium settings
c) play only casual games in 4K

forget 4K even with your upgraded rig.

been their done that, you seem like the person that rarely upgrades. so unless your playing casual/lower settings just dont game at 4K by all means buy a 4K tv and game at 1080p

even my 1080TI and 5930K has issues at 4K on Max settings on every game.
many i just have to settle for Medium/High

so much so i have a:
1440p ultrawide
4K Gsync monitor
4K TV

IVe settled just for 3440x1440 UW & everything else is the cupboard not being used

Wait till xmas, that new xbox isnt out right now anyway ? At xmas you can get some combo of ryzen and vega which is basically a revolution for PC
It'll swamp whatever the next consoles seem to be offering the PC version will be far better and as said proper 4k requires real next gen tech so yea dont go yet

the 290 is still more than enough for 1080p 60hz, all you need is a new cpu to boost those minimums and stabilze the average, i would swap the FX to a Ryzen 1600 or 1700, that would give you a nice fps boost in 1080p, and plenty of cores and thread to future proof or multi-task.
beside by the end of the year you will have GPU choice from Vega and maybe volta, so to me the priority is the cpu upgrade, the gpu can wait.

I think this is what I'm going to do

console 4k is not PC 4k, often consoles run at equivalent of medium settings on PC, while PC when benched it's often at max settings, those max settings eats about half the performance, a decent pc with R9 390 would run games as good as the scorpio if the settings are identical, and if you put the scorpio at equivalent of max settings it wont even hit 30 on most games.

any savings made buying a new xbox will still be spent over time with increased game prices until the next iteration that wont be backwards compatable. I would never buy back into a console now

I was shocked when I saw Assetto Corsa on PC versus being used to Assetto Corsa PS4. Flat lighting and shadows amongst many other things.

It'll be interesting to see how they manage this supposed "4k 60fps" in a lot of games, as on paper the console simply doesn't have the grunt to do it. 30fps possibly but i'm betting it'll only be the very occasional game that manages 60fps without a major downgrade in visuals.

Does seem kind of weird that both ms and sony released upgraded consoles at relatively close to the end of a console cycle, just seems to be a big push for 4k for some reason.

sell your 290 on ebay while its still worth money. People are loving them for mining

This.

Sold one 290 for £200 yesterday and the other for £157 today. Enough for me to buy a new GTX 1070 30mins ago for £293 :) And I have MSI cashback I can apply for too when I receive the card.
