When a Console is better than your PC...

Xbox one X is not 4K capable.

Its not just the hardware, games for consoles can be optimised vastly more than the same thing on pc.

That means a game can run 4k on apparently worse hardware in a console and do it really well because it's not dealing with all the garbage that a generic "has to work on all pcs" version has to.

Yep so many people missing what the XOX can achieve. Optimisation and passes to get 4K HDR right. Freesync2 support.

Then there is the fact that Ultra/Epic/Extreme settings and to some extent depending on game high settings in PC games, especially at 4K are not all that much more than medium. Not always the case of course but we are often talking about needing to take images of frames, zoom in and compare to see the difference.

The fidelity in Forza as shown honestly was impressive. Others have stated it's just a racing game so it's easier but if that's the case we'd be a lot further ahead than we are for them.

It won't be able to run that many games at 60fps even if it can do 4K, i think some games were also mentioned to run at 30fps already. Not that i don't like console games at times but on my PC i am quite happy with 1440p and high hz, it is a lot smoother for gaming in any type of game when you're above 100+fps.

But the new Xbox will do very well for the price i am sure, just don't expect 60fps for all games when a high end 1080Ti can't even hold that at 4K in demanding titles. And that card is literally almost 2x more powerful than the GPU in the new Xbox.

"console optimization" didnt really help the ps4/xbone, dont see why it will be different here. one x will do 4k/medium/30fps standard, 60fps on non intensive games like forza.

IMO they should have went for lower res but higher frames and higher graphical fidelity, not just regular xbone graphics in 4k resolution

@OP your pc is almost as good as the one x, you have a better cpu and the 290 is almost as good as the 480/580

I would just stick with the pc if your semi interested in having the best experience it's been reported quite a lot the last few days the Xbox x won't be native 4K for most games and will use checkerboarding same as PS4 pro.

"Destiny 2 project lead, Mark Noseworthy has confirmed in a set of tweets that the game is CPU-bound. Even if they lower the resolution to 1080p, it won’t be possible to achieve 60 FPS no matter the platform."

End of the day it still has the same pants cpu the normal Xbox one has that won't change things throwing more gpu power at it, the console is just a refresh same as the PS4 pro the next gen consoles will be a lot better in 2-5 years time.

It'll be interesting to see how they manage this supposed "4k 60fps" in a lot of games, as on paper the console simply doesn't have the grunt to do it. 30fps possibly but i'm betting it'll only be the very occasional game that manages 60fps without a major downgrade in visuals.

Does seem kind of weird that both ms and sony released upgraded consoles at relatively close to the end of a console cycle, just seems to be a big push for 4k for some reason.
Technically only Forza was advertised as 60 fps. They only banged on about 4k.

The Xbox one x will be able to do 4K

A Kia picanto can be raced around a track.

Neither will give satisfactory results.

I think people will get a shock at just how quick it is.

Yes the CPU is a bit pants but we all know games tend to be massively GPU bound now.

Like somebody else said, the difference between high and ultra is often not even noticeable without looking at static screen shots and going over it with a fine tooth comb, yet us PC gamers still love to whack everything to maximum and then complain when things don't run smoothly.

Guess we will know in 5 months for sure.

God forbid on a pc hardware forum

Hey if it was a new console with good change of hardware I would buy one it's only 500 quid hardly a massive amount of money and normally try the consoles at some point had Xbox one and the old PS4 and even bought a PS4 slim last week as I was bored and wanted to try horizen, but with devs coming out saying it won't do native 4K on some games already without it being out is hardly a good thing.

£500 is near 1080ti money and being on a pc forum I would chose that over a console right now considering you can pick up a Xbox one s for around 100-130 2nd hand and a PS4 for near the same it's hardly good value spending 5x that for not a whole lot more.

It's not the same improvement going from a £100 gfx card to a £500 one.

The XOX isn't a graphics card upgrade, it's the whole system. The difference between a £100 PC and a £500 it's huge.

It's not a whole system though the only main difference is the gfx card which is a clocked 580 the cpu is still the same 4-5 year old one in the Xbox one just overclocked 4gb extra ram and new cooling your paying for the new gpu and 4K blurry drive that's all.

From theXbox x thread on here.

"If we look at the Xbox One and PS4 as examples of shared memory, they have 8GB shared but obviously they don't come close to an 8GB video card, they're more similar to a 2GB or 3GB video card with 6GB of system memory. It's not all for the GPU, the part of the game that runs on the CPU needs that memory too!

As for the speed of the shared memory, remember that the memory bandwidth has to be shared between the GPU and CPU. For reference the PS4 had 176GB/sec of memory bandwidth. That sounds great, right? Well it still can't do 16x anisotropic filtering (a feature that relies on extra memory bandwidth) in most games, something that is easy for almost any dedicated GPU. The GTX 950 is way more powerful than the PS4, yet it only has 106GB/sec of memory bandwidth. Even the GTX 960 has less memory bandwidth at 112GB/sec. This is partly due to more efficient architecture with caching and delta compression and tiled rendering, but it's also due to the PS4 having to share that RAM. The CPU needs to use the memory too! The XXX has 326GB/sec while the RX 580 has 256GB/sec. Again, the GTX 1070 actually has the same amount of memory bandwidth as the RX 580 at 256GB/sec, but we know it's much faster.

Microsoft has been talking about 6 TFLOPS a lot, and people have really latched onto it. That's more TFLOPS than a GTX 980 Ti and near the GTX 1070! Oh wait, an AMD RX 580 gets over 6 TFLOPS with boost clocks or overclocking, and that isn't close to a 980 Ti or 1070. You just can't compare TFLOPS on different architectures when talking about game performance. the 6GB GTX 1060 which compares very closely to the RX 580 gets only 3.9 TFLOPS (4.3 with boost clocks). For another comparison, the PS4 gets 1.84 TFLOPS while the GTX 1050 only gets 1.7-1.8, and the GTX 1050 is definitely more powerful.

I've seen lots of people claiming that because the XXX has an 8 core CPU that means you would need an 8 core Ryzen or Skylake-X to compare. This is completely ridiculous because it's the same old Jaguar architecture as the 8 core CPUs in the Xbox One and PS4, which we know sucks. It's like people forgot that the original releases also had 8 core CPUs. It's an architecture designed for tablets. The CPU in the Xbox One and PS4 gets handily beaten by the dual core Pentium G4560, in most games the Pentium gets more than double the performance. Obviously the number of cores is not everything. The XXX increases the clockspeed by about 30%, not enough to close that gap.

The new integrated GPU on the XXX is a modified version of the RX 580, it has more cores but a lower clockspeed. In the end they get pretty similar TFLOPS as the XXX increases the number of cores by about 11% but decreases the clockspeed by about 7% to 13% for boost clock."

the 290 is still more than enough for 1080p 60hz, all you need is a new cpu to boost those minimums and stabilze the average, i would swap the FX to a Ryzen 1600 or 1700, that would give you a nice fps boost in 1080p, and plenty of cores and thread to future proof or multi-task.
beside by the end of the year you will have GPU choice from Vega and maybe volta, so to me the priority is the cpu upgrade, the gpu can wait.
This is likely to give you the best bang for your buck in your scenario. For 4K, without turning settings down too much and depending on your desired FPS, you'd be looking anywhere from a 1070, 1080 or ideally a 1080 Ti. The next wave of GPU launches should see that performance trickle down to the next price point at least.

Parents will be cheesed off yet again with a 3rd release so soon.

Then they should be buying more productive things for their kids. Especially if the parents are not aware they need a 4K TV with HDR 10 to get the most out of this console. Not a 32inch 720p TV....:p

Just purchased an 1070 for my HTPC and will be getting Vega for my main PC soon as the GPU is released. I be getting this console too because...well....I can. Cant wait for November :)
