EV general discussion

Other than they are objectively better in every single way than a halogen lamp other than cost to replace.

If you needed to replace the entire halogen headlight assembly on an older car it would also cost £lol for a brand new part.

The issue here is not the LEDs it’s modern throw away manufacturing methodologies. The light units could be designed in a way where the LEDs, drivers and control electronics could be individually replaced easily by the end user but that’s not the way and wouldn’t benefit our corporate overlords.

It’s one reason I very much welcome the EUs rules on user replaceable batteries in things like phones.

Good halogens are still good tbh. If people can't see at night using them they probably shouldn't be driving. Also a lot less dazzing to others.

But yea there should be rules to make individual parts replaceable.

Them still being good, doesn’t make them better than LEDs though, that’s the point.

if you put 100 people into 2 cars, one with average LED lamps and one with the best halogens on the market and asked them which they prefer, which do you think they’ll pick?

And also aftermarket parts.

Which is completely unnecessary tech costing the customer a fortune to fix later. Another idiot with a bright idea...
Not as bright as the lights

Tell me you haven’t driven a car with matrix lights without telling me…

Make sure you also show them repair/replacement costs though.

A lot less dazzling compared to headlights that create a halo around on coming cars whilst on full beam, surely not, it's pretty amazing, I have never had anyone flash me using these.

Modern cars have fancy tech that's cost a fortune to buy, so it's no surprise it will cost a fortune to repair, if you can even get the parts, whether ICE or EV.

Are old cars better, I maintain a couple of 15yr old + cars, I would say no, hard to get genuine parts, pattern parts can be low quality and not always cheap.

Currently sat in Honda Wolverhampton waiting for my car to charge before I can leave, and hopefully never return because this place is an absolute dump, on top of being called a **** by some random white van man whilst walking along the side of the road from the station to the garage
It's a term of endearment round those parts:D

Interesting for all the nutters who were obsessed with it being an EV.

Fire at airport car park started accidentally

A fire investigation into the blaze that broke out in a multi-storey car park at London Luton Airport was accidental, the fire service can confirm.

At its height, more than 100 firefighters tackled the fire, which started in the evening of 10 October 2023 and saw aircraft grounded until the following day.

Following the fire, a multi-agency investigation took place between Bedfordshire Police and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which finished this week.

As a result of the investigation, all evidence points to the most probable cause being an electrical fault or component failure, which started in the engine bay of the vehicle whilst it was in motion.

The developing fire spread to other components, and whilst the owner of the vehicle attempted to fight the fire, the vehicle became overrun with flames and spread to other parked vehicles.

The vehicle involved was diesel-powered – it was not a mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle.

When the fire service arrived on the night, crews were faced with a rapidly escalating fire and shortly after, declared a major incident. All those involved in the multi-agency response worked incredibly hard to get the blaze under control and protect vital infrastructure including neighbouring car park and the Luton DART.

A full incident report is expected to be published in summer 2024.

To be fair, the town centre was quite nice as the buildings are very period and it was pretty clean.

no I think car park battery fire concerns are down the list, should I park next to a chinese ev though;
on the replacement parts cost concern, after watching ex-30 video - volvo
salesman was extolling google voice control as a good safe substitute for finickety buttons - now - if that system or the media screen(like issue tesla had ) breaks down .....
Let alone, it is controversial whether voice controls, if you could tolerate that, are safer, versus an instinctive push of the appropriate control.

top gear, seem to have upped their video quality with another multi ev comparison - also considering that handling on renault is superior
(mr symonds's on your m3 range test video, take note - car performance is more being a straight line hero)

Halogens cannot in any way be described as good compared to any HID, LED or Laser lighting technology. Thinking otherwise is pure cope.

I get dazzled more often by poorly adjusted halogens than anything else. At least HID/LED/Laser has auto levelling as a requirement and is far less likely to be poorly adjusted.

Hi folks, about to become an EV owner and looking for some advice on home chargers.

Any recommendations for good models? I have octopus so will probably for one of their intelligent tariffs.

Is it worth getting an electrician to install (mine will go right next to external electrical wall box) or to get it done all in one e.g. through octopus?

I’m buying an e-Golf and will be doing low mileage but want convenience of home wall charger.

Any help much appreciated!

It depends how low, you don’t need a huge % of your usage in the cheap period to make intelligent a better option.

How low milage and how much electric to you currently use?

If you are looking to be an octopus customer then I’d recommend buying a charger that supports Intelligent rather than relying on the cars API.

Octopus should cover a competitive price but shop around.

octopus you probably want to be looking at either a zappi or an ohme. even if your car is directly supported by intelligent octopus, many manufacturers are not that happy about that and some cars have already been removed

intelligent octopus is an excellent tariff esp if you want to play it safe and not risk electricity going up in price, even more so if you can push your usage over night such as dishwasher, tumble drier, heated airer and washing machine

am sure octopus will do a good job however if they cover your area Incan also reccomend Elecology especially because I had some issues with my zappi but their after sales support has been v good in getting it sorted.
