When are you going fully electric?

On the subject of upcoming VED changes, does anyone know a way to get the original list price easily? I'm thinking about a cheap heat pump model 3 standard range as a runabout, but would prefer to land in that £190 bracket not the 'luxury' bracket? Does this mean I'm restricted to white cars? I can't remember if picking black/blue/red pushed it over 40k? Looking at 71/22 plates.
it doesnt matter at the moment....... so long as you get a new car before april, or ANY 2nd hand full EV was bought before april you wont get hit for luxury car tax on an EV.

as much as i moan about them retrospectively hitting car tax with EVs, they are not retrospectively adding the lux tax

once we get past April then you will see the luxury car tax in the details on autotrader i think.

Thanks, I totally misread it! Looks like you're right:

Additional rate (expensive car supplement)

For new electric vehicles with a list price exceeding £40,000, you will now need to pay the expensive car supplement from the second tax payment onwards. This applies to vehicles registered on or after 1 April 2025.

I need to see if I can get my new lease a bit early then! :D

The 40K band should be updated(but ofc we know it wont) back when it was introduced 40k did represent a good spec BMW/Merc etc now unless they want to incentivise a Chinese take over even a basic new Focus is 28K

Road Tax was abolished in 1937 dude, normal taxation and Council tax pays for the roads.
EV owners don't pay because of zero emissions.
The new ideas are to go back to a Road Tax.
Regardless of you thinking the E in VED was for emissions, the Gov websites still use "VED" and "road tax" interchangeably and have for some years, so the whole "it was abolished decades ago" nugget of info is invalid :p :D

We had similar issues at work with the allowances/bandings for company cars, they were set 10 years ago and the list prices have increased at quite rate since then.

If you can link to one page on the Gov site that says Road Tax I will back down.
I've even done a search for you and you can see they never mention the word:

Still lost about point about EV owners not paying

Quite simple really, I think the Tory Government promised EV owners they wouldn't have to pay car tax or ULEZ if they went 'Green'.
I don't think one person bought an EV because they didn't have to pay car tax but I reckon quite a few bought one because they didn't have to pay ULEZ.
However saying that I was in London for 4 days a week ago and I was staggered how many EVs there aren't.
Me and the Mrs were walking down major roads like Oxford Street, Tottenham Court Road etc trying to spot them and they were quite rare.
Perhaps they are used more on the outer zones?

I thought ulez was free for an ev, but the congestion charge was coming in for evs?

Is this correct, EVs only pay £10?

Only battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are eligible for the cleaner vehicle discount. From 25 December 2025, the cleaner vehicle discount will be discontinued. From this date, all vehicle owners, unless in receipt of another discount or exemption, will need to pay to enter the Congestion Charge zone during charging hours.

You can apply for a discount online, but you'll need to supply certain documents to show you're entitled to the discount.

Documents you need to provide?

You will need to upload images or send photocopies of the following documents to apply for the discount:

UK-registered

  • V5C vehicle registration certificate (logbook) issued by the DVLA

Non-UK registered

You have to pay £10 to register each vehicle for the discount. This will need to be renewed every year.

Renewing your cleaner vehicle discount

We will notify you when your discount is due to expire. You will be able to renew your discount online once you have received this notification.

If you can provide us with all your cleaner vehicle discount documents you can apply online now.

Stop googling stuff. This is the CURRENT situation and isn’t ULEV. In the future EV have to pay congestion charge too.

Still not sure what point you are trying to make. You have gone from stating EV not needing to pay VED/road tax/whatever. Then to ULEV. Now to congestion charge.

From April all EV pay VED. Some £600 a year on a £40k car. From dec 2025 all cars pay £15 congestion charge.

Woah, hold on, a simple question was asked about why EVs don't pay VED, I just replied why they didn't haven't to pay it and the promises made by the Tory's.
I'm not arguing with you, I just gave a simple explanation why vegan eating save the planet EV drivers didn't have to pay it at the moment.
Go and argue with somebody else and then I asked a question about the Congestion Charge because I've never heard of it (don't live anywhere near one).
If you can't reply to me nicely then bog off.

How about stop getting so offended. Ev drivers do pay. And it’s. £600 a year hit for most. I know it’s not hitting the threshold but consider this Would you have bought your MG if you were paying £50 a month to tax it. When you said you only do 200 miles a month.

I won’t bog off a discussion thread either

I don't know why you are telling me this.
You asked this

Still lost about point about EV owners not paying

I told you the reason why, the Tory's promised it for EV owners.
Why you are now going off on one talking about what's coming in the future is beyond me.
Please stop.

Most of the ULEZ camera don't work anyway especially on side roads. Seems like Khan has been defeated in the suburbs.

If you sign up for their auto-pay system, you get automatically billed when your reg is picked up. So no need to pay it just incase. I've been in and out in an old diesel and not pinged by it. A colleague has been doing it for a year and not got a hit.
