When are you going fully electric?

Pricing up the hardware for a home ev charger install (for id3)

myself and neighbours each have a 2.5mm2 cable over a distance of 25/30M to get to garages and it would cost £4/5K to dig up paving and install a 4+mm2 (probably can't pull a bigger cable through)
looks like existing cable could pull 3.7KW within the 5% voltage drop limits
if we then had a
PME FAULT DETECTION METAL CU WITH RCBO AND SURGE PROTECTION £85

16 Amp 230V 3 Pin Interlock Socket Switched 2P+E Single Phase Blue £30

Tesla – Commando Charger For 1 Phase 16A Commando Socket £200

any thoughts on pope maths ?
probably need an electrician to install it (to check CU connections, also I guess you must ferrule cables, and run tests)
the garage 2.5 cable would go exclusively to the PME unit, and other electrical stuff could be plugged in the commando inside garage, when not used for the ev parked outside garage (cable under door).
would need to use a fair amount of electricity above the power of a granny charger, to offset the install cost; neighbour with id4 currently limits his garage granny to 2Kw to avoid heating.
Seems ID3 could work on octopus Intelligent without need for a smart charger.
Sounds nuts to do all that and only end up with 4mm cable. Why does it have to be buried?

10yr old development has several blocks of 3 terraced houses each with their 3 garages up the road adjoining each terrace, so 2 owners have to cross neighbours property to get to their garage.
name of the game is getting 4kw versus granny's 2kw for £400 e:vs £4K for 7.4Kw

My favourite story of the day, buys an EV but doesn't even think where he is going to charge it so blames the Council :)

So the old boy has done the quite common "That'll see me out" final car purchase, has been scared by the 'ban' on combustion vehicles so has gone EV. With the knowledge that at some point everyone will have to go electric (as per the government mandate) so assumes that his local council might have a clue as to how over half the people in that particular area might be able to do that without off road parking and gets a public sector shrug and 'it's not our fault' as a response.

On the one hand he has put himself in a completely unnecessary position, on the other it simply highlights an issue that has yet to be addressed.

Reading between the lines it sounds like he has proposed a cable channel to be put into the pavement (fair suggestion TBH) but is getting stonewalled by a council who needs to be told what to do by those up the chain.

I've got a customer in a similar situation with charging their PHEV and has been for years. In fact he is now buying a new PHEV with the situation still not resolved which seems mad to me.

I expect you’ll be able to move faster once you are fully on their system and they have confirmed meter readings.

She says on Nov 2nd change tariff to iGo and then wait 4 to 6 weeks, hopefully it does go quicker.
When I ordered my charger they gave me a date a month away and another 2 months away neither I could do.
I rang up and a bloke said "How does next Saturday sound?".

I've done similar, bought this car to hopefully last me until death but not because I've been scared, it's because I've always been a technology geek and how we Granny drive it just seemed the right thing to do.
Hopefully I don't regret it.

The council blame the government for lack of 'guidance' when all he wants to install is one of these - https://www.kerbocharge.com/

Council are just be daft wombles as usual.

Exactly. Councils should be proactively putting these things in, not stonewalling people who ask for one.

Hell, if Virgin Media can carve up every pavement in the UK on the off chance you want to watch more channels of utter tripe then the council can do it for something actually useful.

What would you do in my situation?:
- current car: '16 plate petrol astra with 20k mileage, excellent condition.
- desired fuel type: I've been following EVs since leaf/zoe times (I test drove the original leaf but hated the grabby brakes, so bought the astra instead which has been fantastic), so fairly decent understanding, I could handle going full EV, but I don't actually care, so petrol/hybrid/phev/ev is all fair game.
- trips: mostly 2-5 miles shop/tip runs, need ability to get to the hospital and back 70 mile round trip, family visits 200 miles each way done on separate days but no destination charging.
- driveway: yes (but if I move maybe not idk), no charger currently.
- unusual requirement: dust mite allergy means leather seats mandatory, avoid fabric as much as possible. has the benefit of being more durable, so spending more is ok if the car lasts longer.
- budget: because I don't do a lot of miles I don't want to spend much, roughly 15-20k for something 1-3 years old (included selling the astra for ~8k ish), but leather seats tends to be a premium option which makes it tricky and even premium trims are going fabric (or recycled material with unknown dust mite characteristics, I ask them but they never know, so avoid).

My current thinking: I could run the astra into the ground given it's good condition it might last ages, or I could replace it now to avoid potential bills (but what with), or try going carless (concerned about ncd expiring), or run the astra longer to delay if better options might appear soon. It would be a straightforward decision if the astra electric had leather seats, but it doesn't so rip.

Mad really, if he wanted to drop his kerb for a driveway they wouldn't have a problem

It doesn’t sound like you need a new car so I’d keep your current car for now until you know what you want to replace it with.

There are plenty of electric options that fit your needs but I wouldn’t be in any rush if your current car fits your needs and you don’t have a significant desire to replace it.

I get the argument hat not everyone can charge at home but we absolutely miles away from that even being a bottleneck for sales in this country.

Absolutely. Of the 23 houses on my road with a driveway, there are only 2 EVs. Mine, and the lady opposite who was really impressed with my Zoe and got herself a Fiat e500 shortly after.

In fact, the only other EV is owned by someone who doesn't have a drive!

An eNiro in trim level 3 (or higher) fits all of those criteria - except the "leather" seats are PU.

You'd need a stop on the 400 mile round trips, but even in winter you should be able to do it with a single 30-45 min rapid charge (or e.g. 20 mins toilet & coffee break on the way there, same on the way back).

It does sound like the current car does everything you need though

I did ABRP with a mid spec (58KW) ID.3, Bristol to Leeds and back (430~ miles), needed a 16 minute stop on the way up, and 2 25 minute stops on the way down (starting with 100% and aiming for 10% at home), with about 2hr of driving between the 2nd and 3rd stops.
I generally need to stop for the loo/stretch my ageing legs more often than that, so would end up doing 2 15 minute stops each way, although I always end up stopped for longer at services waiting for my wife and daughter to faff about.

Hi was going to come in to say - initial estimate of April / May

Is now showing mid Feb to end of March and desperately trying to arrange an 'interim vehicle' with them which is, quite honestly, painful!

Fingers crossed it gets sooner and keep us updated :)

@Goodie I had an email yesterday morning saying there was an interim vehicle in and was I interested

Said "yes, what's the process?" emailed me back to say they prep contracts and send to sign

Prep away I said only, an hour later, to be told it had been reserved by someone else .....

Further email this morning saying it is no longer reserved and was interested, said yes and just waiting on the contracts to be sent over but could be 2-4 weeks to get the interim vehicle

how do they work, I haven’t heard of it before? Hoping your lead time is pessimistic, can’t see there being much difference for the sake of the black edition. Still waiting for my update to come through. I think they’re obligated within 48 hours so should hear this afternoon.

Basically a short to medium term hire car. All the same T&Cs as the main car - monthly payments are slightly higher as it's short term but gets through any "gap" waiting for the EV to be delivered.

They appear to be pool cars and you (if expressed interest) get notified if one comes in. Downside is you have to be quick and have no choice over what it is - take it or leave it !

Had a call from the delivery company to say they’re delayed.

The car doesn’t have any charge and they haven’t been able to find any working fast chargers as they’re in use/broken.

Hopefully not a sign of things to come :P
