When are you going fully electric?

I have a cheap lease on an Ioniq and doing nearly 70 miles a day have only plugged it into a fast charger once, it just goes on the 3 pin at home overnight. Obviously if you haven't got off road parking then it's not much use but don't feel like you have to have a charging point to run an electric car.

I am in 2 minds at the minute on what to do when we get ours.

Octopus energy offer the cheap tarriff between 12-4 in the morning, to take full advantage of this a wall box at home needs to be installed.

We need to fork out £650ish for a wall box so to move over to the wall box.

I've estimated that on 10k miles costs will be around £400-£500 worth of electric on current tarriff but then £100-£200 using the octopus energy.

Need to do more man maths to see if it is worth while and also there is the convenience of it all.

If you're going full electric a dedicated charger is a no brainer imo.

This is why the Ohme (commando version) is a great option, you can just get a 32A IP6x rated commando socket fitted, and a small meter style cupboard (if you like), then use the Octopus/Ohme offer and get the smart cable/charger for £199 from here! Then if you move you can take it with you, or you can use your socket with other equipment as well. :)
 
We use Octopus Go for the 4 hours at 5p and the remainder at 13p. It works out great as we use the Andersen A2 charger app to set the charge to come of at those times and the car chargers to the percentage we have set for the ID3 or to full for the Sorento PHEV.

I would absolutely recommend getting a proper wall charger fitted as they are much less hassle than getting the granny charger out each time. The Andersen hides the cable away as well which I think is a big bonus.

I was pretty much set on a pod point but just text a friendly electrician for a price fitted for the 32a version.

I like the idea I could connect the caravan.
 
Actually having a caravan is probably the only reason you would tolerate having something that looks like its from a caravan park screwed to your house.

Make sure you can lock it so no one nicks your Ohme cable and eyes open the ground protection isn't as good as a proper EVSE wall box.

I think the regs changed and to install the commando you need to put it on its own earth rod in case the earth from the grid drops out (bad time if there is a fault e.g. you can get electrocuted from your car). The regs are effectively the same as those for an EV charger now.

Some EV chargers get around this by earth fault detection built into the device or a separate device is installed in line with the charger.

You’d need somewhere near the commando to install the earth rod.

I'm seeing more potential for hydrogen powered vehicles and energy storage.
 
I would voice a note of caution on using the 3-pin to charge all the time. I have heard about older/home-installed/dodgy wiring going kaput because the plugs can't cope with constant full load. Also - you need to make sure the charging unit itself doesn't get wet, including condensation. Finally, it's 3kW max, so less than half the charge rate of a wall charger.

I would take advantage of the £350 grant while it still exists and invest in the future (unless you're going to move, but even then it'll only add to the attractiveness of your property and is a tiny cost compared to estate agents/solicitors/gougers)

If you read up on FCEV vehicles though they seem to only see it more applicable to larger vehicles esp towing and/or in very cold or hot climates.

Going forward there is going to be a place for both FCEV and BEV vehicles but I think its going to be mainly vans and trucks which are FCEV rather than run of the mill cars.

Hydrogen will become more of a viable option, especially as energy generation moves towards renewable and the in-efficiency of extracting hydrogen becomes less of an issue.

Another recommendation for the Andersen. It is probably more than most want to spend, however.

Something to think about - if energy generation is clean, free and surplus (i.e. Wind generation) then it doesn't matter if extracting hydrogen is not efficient.

While true the reality is it'd all be taken up with shipping, long distance road, aviation and home heating before we should be putting it in regular cars where a good solution already exists in the form of BEV.

Completely - hence my post above which mentioned storage and vehicles.
Using hydrogen as energy storage to put back into the Grid, which could power the regular cars :)

Aslo, for JLR it's probably a solution to build a green 4x4 or SUV which doesn't weigh 3+ tons.

BEV's are probably the best option for normal passenger cars but it doesn't have to be the only option.
