20th Every month. I hate it for direct debits that refuse to budge from the 1st
I took a bit of time to sort out my finances and start saving, but one of the best things I did was get a second bank account, move all my direct debits to it and cut up the card they give you. Santander 123 account is ideal because of the cashback, but you need to put in at least £1K a month (usually doable if you're paying a mortgage)
Anyway, don't tell your company to change where your wages go, simply set-up a standing order to transfer the totally amount for your monthly bills to this second account.
Immediately you're unable to spend the money that is NEEDED to pay the bills and now you don't care what time of the month they come up AND there's no surprises when they do!
Slowly increase the amount of your standing order so that this second account starts to build up some extra cash each month.
Sorry if this is preaching to the choir and you're totally on top of everything, but you specifically mentioned the same kind of problem I was facing so thought I'd at least mention how I managed to fix it myself.
For anyone else on a more complex pay schedule I also helped a friend who got weekly pay cheques sort himself out by simply setting up standing orders each week (i.e. take your totally monthly payments and divide by 4). You just need to make sure to populate the account with 1 month total bills to make sure all the bills could be covered if they came out on the 1st of the month and you make payments over the month. It's almost like giving a loan to yourself and make him a much happier person on a night out
