When do you think the XP crowd will finally move on?

The fact is, for many 'non-enthusiast' users, the idea of changing their OS probably never even occurs to them.
Yep. A new PC comes with a new OS.
That's how the general public think, and that's how Microsoft keep their monopoly wagon rolling.

No they keep it rolling, by providing an easy to use, stable os. that everyone knows how to use and supports all hardware, games and apps. Join that with marketing and it's a winner. I don't see any alternative on the market a beginner could use and setup.

except Mac OS of course :P

the reason (in my opinion!) why many of the XP crowd haven't and won't move to vista is because vista offers no practical and tangible benefit over XP it not like any programs don't run on XP*

well, thats why i'm still on XP anyway.

yes, i know about Halo2 and shadowrun. don't bother telling me

please.

Its a good OS and there's currently not a lot else out there in terms of availability, useability and general ease of use. Someone people just want to sit down and use a pc, not sit down configuring it.

I still run xp. Tried vista when it first came out and really didn't get on with it, mainly the aero interface that annoyed me, (running xp I turn all the graphics off, looks just like 2000 :), and the fact it was so bloated (i'm sure the performace issues have now been addressed).

That coupled with the fact that I upgrade my computer bit by bit means I rarely buy an OS as the money can be better spent on hardware.

Although I do think i'll probably switch to windows 7, seems far more like my sort of OS tan vista.

What about the benefit that it has a 64bit version thats not completely rubbish? XP 64bit is terrible while Vista 64bit is very good. Theres plenty more benefits too, such as easier to use interfaces for setting up networks.

sorry i know u weren't talking to me but

what would the average home user want with a 64bit os ?

Most users on here are not average home users, but they have the benefit of more addressable RAM, which will come into play a lot very soon as 4gb will become the standard sooner than you think.

Whats with the personal attack? This is why i stay in hardware most of the time. Too many people like you that think they know it all. If you bothered to read properly i actually have Vista dual booting on my gaming pc. You also seem to be in the minority as most people have expressed views similar to my own or even agreed with me.

Sorry I was being an idiot. I'm just fed up of people bashing things they haven't tried out. I made an assumption about you which was wrong.

When do you think the XP crowd will finally move on?

When most of them try Vista/Windows 7

In terms of security and usability XP is archaic. I used to be the same, only sticking with XP refusing to move but I've since realised in terms of security and reliability Windows 7/Vista have come up trumps. I had to repair an install recently due to messing up the boot table. No messing about with commands in recovery console, I simply put the DVD in I then had a long list of options, I could even access my disks and remove files around or test memory, particularly helpful if you manage corrupt the system.

Also take event manager for example, it gives you no clues in XP, with Windows 7 I get full logs in english no converting required all logged and sorted.

It's usability and efficiency like this just makes me a convert and just, to me shows up how much of a dinosaur XP is in comparison.

EDIT : A few more things, Vista defaults whatever drive I install to C:/ I like this XP was always a faff trying to make sure C:/ was kept and Intel RAID drivers are slipstreamed

To those of you desperately defending XP - why did you upgrade from Windows 2000?

Windows 2000 was mainly a business orientated operating system that very few home users ever had. I'd say that most people DIDN'T upgrade from Windows 2000, they upgraded from 98SE. You can't deny that XP has a lot going for it over 98SE.

And by this I don't mean people here necessarily, but people all over the world. The large silent majority who use XP and see no need to change.

Of course these people would never use Vista, that would have already happened. So do you think W7 will be the OS to get them all moving on, or maybe the one after that? The problem is that the majority of people I know who don't know that much about computers see no need to move on from XP. At all. For me it's a toss-up between W7 or even the OS after that, come about 2012 when 32bit OS's really will be phased out.

Mainstream support finishes in 2010 for XP with extended support finishing in 2014. However, I don't see this being a major contributing factor to people changing operating systems.

I'm toying with Open Solaris now as it's out and out better generally, haven't gamed for several years. When I next upgrade, other than my laptop, which will stay XP for the occasional game, and I think it'd struggle with windows 7. May stick W7 in a VM for education purposes...

which games are dx10

There are quite a few out now. FarCry2, Crysis/Warhead, Hellgate London to name a couple. You can certainly see the difference between DX9 and DX10 in FarCry2.

Did'nt have 2000. I came from Windows 98SE which i found to be very unstable. XP was like a breath of fresh air.

Since when was mac as easy to set up as windows, or supports all hardware or supports games...

Windows have got a monopoly as that's what everyone knows, most people aren't willing to re-learn how to configure basic things. Or how to do x-y-z in word on a new os or program..
