When do you use 5th gear

When i run out of 4th at 115mph so not very often.

judging from the username i take it we are on about a scoob here?

so you drive around (legally) all the time in 2nd/3rd? whats the point in having all that power on roads you will never use it on?

or is it just a weekend/track toy?

on topic: after 4th :p

My car decides when to use 5th, auto lol.

With my old Saab it was generally from 50mph, it crumbled at much less than that.

In 30MPH > zones the max I can use is really 3rd gear, hardly ever have enough stretches of road to hit 5th in the inner city roads, usually it's just start/stop driving. :(

At the point that I have reached the desired speed.

This may be as low as 25-30mph around quiet flat straight resedential roads where no acceleration is required. However on NSL roads I will not usually select 5th (or 4th on occasion) before reaching cruising speed.

Depends.. if i'm driving normal road conditions in my own car I will use 5th at 50+

But I don't tend to use it if i'm on blues in the Ambulance unless it's a straight dual carriageway for a good few miles.

If the engine isn't labouring then I'll keep it in fifth, normally a constant 30mph, anything less and it'll be 4th. My mother has a bad habit of staying in too high a gear and labouring the engine constantly.

I would never drive at 30mph in 5th, as others have said 45-50mph in most cars is where its at, you want around the 2000rpm for optimum fuel consumption, and in most cars 5th gear at 30mph is not near 2000rpm, and is putting the engine under strain.op you are right your friend is wrong.

I select 5th if I'm doing >50mph and the traffic is moving steadily. If I'm on a B road and traffic is yo yoing then I'll stick to 4th up to about 55-60mph. 6th is only used when doing 70mph at a constant speed i.e. motorway/dual carriage way. If I'm giving it some then 5th isn't used.

if my 55 bhp 106 turd can use 5th from about 30 mph onwards I'm sure a 1.6 Verso can.
Couldn't tell you the revs I change at as it's too poverty spec to have a rev counter :D

The old 1.2 clio I had would do 30 in 5th, but as soon as there was even a slight incline it would labour. The 1.6 Fiesta I have now happily goes up hills in 5th at 30mph. Could even probably use a 6th on the motorway pretty happily.

2nd and 3rd are the main gears for my Scoob round town, 4th at 37ish and 5th at 45ish.

That power comes in most handy when you need to safely overtake, the rest of the time I just love the sound :)

Can't see the point sitting at 30 in 5th, boost doesn't exist this far down the revrange and unless you've got a large engine pickup will be pathetic in most cars.

Instant economy is also worse in 5th at 30, much better to sit in 4th, then we open up another can of worms, which involves what if you need to put your foot down and your stuck with 0 engine power.
