OK. i have money, and its burning a hole. i usually upgrade my system on a yearly basis, and atm am running with
12gb corsair xms3 1600mhz
i7 950
40gb solid state
2x 1tb HDD's in RAID0
ATI 6870
and a gagabyte x58a-ud3r
850W cooler master psu

I run 2x 1080p monitors, and play most of the latest titles, but seem to be playing rift a lot lately.

even when playing rift the system isnt running as fast as i like.

the more i look at the store website, the more im wanting to upgrade now, so what do i do? wait it out? when are the new product lines released? or should i upgrade now, seeing as, really, i am only looking to upgrade ram cpu gfx mobo

I'd wait till ivybridge which comes out in 2012. Your current system isn't exactly bad. Not sure about new graphics coming out, if osmeone could enlighten me?

From bits i've read on this forum AMD have new cards out last qtr '11 and Nvidia now first qtr '12

But the release dates tend to slip somewhat

so you guys would advise me to wait? should i buy another 6870 in the meantime to boost gaming performance?
It'd probably be best to wait and see exactly how big a jump in performance for graphic card going from 40nm to 28nm, then decide if it would be better to pick up another 6870 to Crossfire, or just grab a new gen card.

Also, is your i7 950 at stock speed? You might be able to get higher frame rate if you overclock it if you not already do so, as mmorpgs usually tends to be more CPU dependent than graphic...especially when you got lots of characters on screen at the same time...and for some reason, the game developers can't be bothered to make the game uses all 4 cores most of the time. I'd also check the GPU usage to see if it is actually at 100% when during the low frame rate scenes/areas.

5 options.
1. OVERCLOCK!! grrrr.
2. a bigger SSD
3. another monitor
4. crossfire the 6870
5. all of the above

first off, you need to get yourself a nice cooler, a thermalright silver arrow or antec kuhler 620 would do the job nicely
then just read off from this

i bought the same cooler that they were offering with overclocked bundles at the time of my purchase, my intentions were to overclock, just never got round to it, and whenever i try, i just get BSOD, then lose the will to live

I'm playing a lot of Rift too and IMO the problem is the GPU.

My CPU/Memory etc are lower/slower than yours but I run at 2560x1440 on a GTX580 and I know from my own tests that the CPU isn't running at anywhere near full pelt (around 25-30%) whilst the GFX card is at 99% an awful lot of the time.

Personally I'm gonna wait until the next gen cards arrive before upgrading as I've tried a multiple card setup recently (X-Fired 5870's) albeit not on Rift and it just made things worse.

It's not a relevent comparison as the 2560 res would stress the the graphic card more than 1920 res...if you drop your res to 1920, I'm pretty sure you will see the GPU usage not at 100% more often, as the CPU is not keeping up with the card. The OP need to check his own GPU usage in game.
