When is a new 360 too loud?

Yeah, damn you must be right. The hundreds of people on the internet, including games journo's, claiming their 360's are too loud are just making it up and you are of course right - the 360 isn't loud at all

I'm not denying that the 360 is unduly noisy, yes it is noiser than it should be. All I'm saying is that it does seem to get overblown on 'tinternet. The way people talk you would think you could hear the 360 over the sound of a 747 taking off outside of your living room window.

The point I was trying to make was that when playing at normal volume levels, the sound of the 360 isn't distracting to me.

I’ve seen pics of inside a 360 and looks to me like there are no fans on the CPU or the GPU, just the exhaust fans, is this correct? If so you’d need a couple of whopass exhaust fans to keep the air inside moving around the CPU etc. if I’m right (I’m usually not) why isn’t there small fans on the CPU etc?

I can’t believe Bill sat in his office while some executive wheeled out a new 360 and demoed all the feature and he didn’t mention the noise…after all this is the break in a living room device. I’ve got a decent 5.1 set up and I play the drums (ears aren’t that sensitive) yet the 360 is still too loud…

I've had the wierdest phenomenonemenon, where some CDs make louder noises than others. I got Full auto bundled with my 'box, and it and a few other games in my collection such as crackdown seem to sound much louder rotating in the drive than games such as COD4 and Halo 3 which are whisper quiet

when I got my elite is was really loud, but then I realised that it was sitting on a slightly bowed shelf (xbox is in horizontal position) and the small clearance of the 360 resulted in the case touching the shelf - I grabbed a nice flat piece of wood, put some spongy feet under the corners, and put it under the xbox, its pretty quite now.

It's due to the dvd being unbalanced, causes vibration.

Just sold out and bought a 360 elite (always used a PC for gaming). I know the 360 is loud but when is loud too loud? Its like a kettle is constantly boiling in my living room! I’ve had the Elite less than a week, am I within my rights to take it back and ask for a different one? I’m quite prepared to listen to another one in the shop…I’ve spoke to a mate who has a 360 premium and claims it’s quite…should I / can I take it back?

It’s the Falcon Chipset, Benq drive, bought from GameStation.

Any thoughts on the noise issue?

Some people are such fanboys that they've become disillusioned.

I had exactly the same issue and the same responses.. ummm mine isn't that loud... 5 frickin xbox 360's later all with different drives. THEY ARE ALL UNACCEPTBLY loud. I even went in search of different stores pulling back the flaps to find the serial numbers in hope that I'd find a BenQ drive, just to exchange.

ok so it doesn't bother some people... fair enough and good luck to you !

But to simply say mine isn't loud isn't correct.

All 360's have dvd spin noise that is similar to that of a pc when it's installting a game.. The only problem is on a pc it shuts up after a while.. on the 360 it never does until you end the retail game you are playing.

My 360 is in the bedroom.. When my wife walks in, she says what the !@#$ is that noise...

I no longer bother with any retail games cos to me it's too annoying. Only live when the dvd is not needed.

I have two kids who are in bed by 8:00pm.. I don't want to crank up the sound to drown out the spin noise that shouldn't be there. Not when I can have my whisper quiet PS3 play the same game without the whooshing vac in the backround.

I would go as far as to say I am amazed how people accept this... or even worse dillusion themselves to the point of thinking they can't even hear it???????? Maybe they are missing certain parts of the frequency spectrum in their drums, I HAVE NO IDEA.... But ummm you need go see a doctor if you think the 360 isn't loud...

Get rid of it like an annoying quacking girlfriend. That's my advice. I only keep mine for the xbox live gaming that it provides.

A lot of people on the forum agree with you. But as soon as you mention that a 360 is noisy, the same few people tell you to turn up your TV volume or 5.1 system etc.

Also I think a lot of the people here are the type that leave their PCs running 24/7 so if you were used to that for years it would not bug them.

I think if people said "the noise doesn't bother me" as opposed to "mine isn't loud" I would not mind.

Some people say mine is not loud as "I have my sound/5.1 turned up". This annoys me as it is loud if you are having to drown it out with something louder!!!

Q: When is ANY 360 too loud?

A: When it's turned on.

:(

People often quote posts and change a word or 2 for comedic affect. have I done it right?

I find my elite far too loud, when watching films from an external HDD it makes quite an intrusive noise, when playing games its makes a racket, its actually a relief when I turn it off.

When I first got my PS3 I was a bit disappointed as I could hear it above my PC

Even my Wii annoyed me on some games due to the disc thrashing about BUT then I got a 360 and OMFG I have never heard such a racket in all my life!

I have to be honest the 360 has made me far less anal about noise in general so I guess that is a good thing? :p

My God, it would appear that the word 'Fanboy' has become even more cliche'd than the word 'chav'. How on earth can not being bothered by the noise of the 360 make anybody a 'fanboy'?

I have two kids who are in bed by 8:00pm.. I don't want to crank up the sound to drown out the spin noise that shouldn't be there.

I have young kids that are in bed early too, and the volume I have the TV at when they are in bed is not 'cranked', it's just a normal volume, and I cannot hear my 360 over it.

I would go as far as to say I am amazed how people accept this... or even worse dillusion themselves to the point of thinking they can't even hear it????????

So just because somebody doesn't find the noise distarcting, that makes them deluded?

Maybe they are missing certain parts of the frequency spectrum in their drums

My hearing is fine, I work in a steel fabrication factory and we get regular hearing tests, mine is actually above average for my age.

I HAVE NO IDEA.... But ummm you need go see a doctor if you think the 360 isn't loud...

I accept that it is loud, but not so loud as to be distracting IN MY OPINION. Like I've said, simply having the TV on at normal volume, notice I said normal, not 'cranked', is enough to drown the noise of the 360 out.

Like I've already said, it's not that I don't think it's louder than it should be, I'm merely saying that it gets blown out of proportion.

@ DreXeL, But also not just @ DreXeL :p

It's loud, Some people can tolerate it. Others cant.

No one is blowing it out of proportion, It's loud. You Can't deny that.

Lucky for you, You can tolerate it, And it's acceptable for you.

Me, To be honest, I start not to notice it too when I'm watching a movie or playing a game.

But sometimes I notice it, Like in Lost Odyssey, And once i've noticed it, I can't stop lol. Because my ears have picked it out.

I've been noticing it more recently, I put this down to playing on my PS3 and then switching to the 360, I really notice the noise difference then.

ORLY?

Its like a kettle is constantly boiling in my living room!

Did your parents ever turn the vacuum cleaner on while you were watching a movie or playing a video game? :p Same thing

whooshing vac in the backround.

I appreciate that a lot of those comments are tongue in cheek, but come on, anyone would think it's akin to having a jackhammer at full tilt on your living room.

It's loud, but not that loud.

I agree with you, I always have about this :p When I'm playing a game I really don't hear my 360 and I'm in the room next to my young kids so I have the volume quite low. Like you, it's just not an issue to me.

I was being serious when I said I notice it more when going from the PS3 to the 360 but it's still no big deal, it doesn't bother as much as it seems to bother others.

Exactly the same for me mate, the sound from the 360 has always bugged me, I've owned a few 360's and they've all been noisy, usually I've just put up with it even though it was distracting, but then when I brought my PS3 the noise from the 360 became too apparent, I would be playing a game on my PS3 with not even a whisper of noise with my TV on low (at night I don't want to wake people), then immediately after I switch the 360 on and I was like , absolutely unacceptable in my eyes, my PC which is a hell of allot more powerful than the 360 is no where near the volume of the the 360 and it has about 8 fans in it, in fact thinking about it, the 360 was the most noisy electrical component I've ever owned bar the washing machine on the spin cycle,

I'm not trying to put the 360 down on purpose, partly why I'm mad is because I love the games on the 360 it's just so annoying that the hardware so sooooo poor, basically playing a game on the 360 comes with so much mental baggage, not only do you have to endure the jet engine noise of the console itself, then you have the noise from the PSU, oh, then you have the noise from the optical drive, oh, then you constantly have worry about getting the red ring of death, even if a menu takes a few seconds longer to appear in your mind your think "well is this it then" and you sit there waiting for the red ring to appear, when it doesn't you rejoice that you console has lasted another gaming session, oh, then on top of that you worry about the drive scratching your games that you've brought out of your hard earned cash, the list just goes on, it's a complete joke, how it even got off the factory line I just don't get seriously.

To be fair it's a stupid thing to argue over anyway. Either you find the noise acceptable, or you don't.

it doesn't bother as much as it seems to bother others.

Which is the key to this whole debate. :p

Doesn't bother me either, Until I pick up on it. Seriously, It can be a case of it being on all day, PLay game after game, And i'll be fine. Then for some reason, There will be a moment of silence, And that's it, I'll home in on it. And from then on, The Atmosphere is lost :p

That said, I usually just crank up the volume a few extra notches
