what element is the most important to you?

story
game play
graphics
length
innovation

Put in order of importance like for example

game play
graphics
length
story
innovation

I have put game play as most important and innovation as least important

Gameplay most of all, then variety! The rest doesn't really matter. If it has variety it will inherently have a lot of features and replayability, plus a decent length. Graphics are very important too, for the atmosphere of the games. A game like Demon's Souls owe a lot of its ambience to the excellent graphics.

depends on the game, eg: in a sports game story isn't very important.

but generally speaking, for me it's:

innovation
gameplay
story
graphics
length

innovation first because I want to play something that's different. There's games that cover the other categories.

eg: story: baldurs gate, phoenix wright
gameplay: age of empires
graphics: crysis
length: oblivion

baldurs gate is a long game so length is also a factor

Story - SP story means a lot to me
Length - Not fussed about length too much, but 4 hours is stupid when paying £40+
Graphics - I like to look at my TV and think "Wow... They really did a good job"
Sound - I have a 5.1 Onkyo sound system (bloody expensive! almost same price as the TV!) in my room so if the sound is great, I am in love even more
Immersion - Goes with sound tbh
Innovation - Not key, but like something new once in a while, aka Portal or Limbo... Odd yet fun.

I'm surprised "story" comes so high up for so many people. I have never played a game with a story that wasn't clichéd, half-baked and littered with 2 dimensional characters and empty dialogue.
If you want a good story, watch a film or read a book, you're looking in the wrong place if you think you'll find one in a game.
Have you find one in a game and I just haven't played it?

I don't hold all that much importance on graphics, I like games to look nice, but most do anyway and if the rest of the boxes are ticked then I'm happy.

Think variety should be on the list too :) Graphics is not something I'm too bothered about. Still find myself playing ancient games without even thinking about it.

Innovation and length could change places depending. A really good game could be short and I don't mind, but a decent game that is really long can make it better in my eyes.

Innovation can depend on what you mean. If you mean using new controllers, then its not that important however, if it means new IPs and new styles of gameplay then it is important.

With most games, if it is lacking in one section but really good in another, it can make up for it.

I guess you haven't played the likes of Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid Series, Red Dead Redemption, Monkey Island & many other of the point & click games. Those are just a few of the more involved stories, there are plenty of others which have good ones too.

Don't forget that Games are big business these days, they make more money than film industry does and they've started in recent years to reflect that in the writers involved and other aspects that give them film-esque quality.

The fact that there have been attempts to make films of the likes of Mass Effect, Halo, Gears of War etc shows that the story works well enough that somebody would want to try and make a film, not to mention a lot of these big name games already have loads of spin-off novels written within the same canon.

Played the monkey island games first time around and the first part of the new fangled one. While the dialogue can be fleetingly amusing, I wouldn't say the plot is any great shakes :S
Played red dead redemption too, and yes, rockstar do have a good go at plot, but still, cookie cutter characters and painfully clunky dialogue continually let them down.

The reason people write books and make films based on games is the same reason they remake classic films. It's a safe, low risk/high reward, dead-cert bums on seats money making exercise. Nothing more. It's not because the plot of the game is worthy of a film, although street fighter and super mario bros will go down as two of the greatest cinematic achievements of the nineties.

I would LOVE good writers to be involved in games and have a game with genuinely good, fleshed out characters and an involving storyline. I'm just saying that I haven't played it yet and I've played a lot of games.

It's not important to me when looking for a game to play because I know I'm not going to get it.
