Maybe i'm just old but started playing a little PubG with my cousin and his friends and they all have their microphone settings set to open.

So I can hear feedback constantly. From key strokes on the keyboard to even gun fire in game because despite them wearing headphones the sound is playing back through their microphones at times.

Like surely it's common curtsy to have freaking push to talk on as standard?

No I don't but that's because I set up activation properly. I use a high end desk mic however so not sure how much this will effect it.

Nobody I know has ever complained about this though, at most we will ask / help someone customise their settings so that we only hear them. I would never ever expect someone to use it. Especially in something like pubg. The last thing you want your team doing when struck by a surprise firefight is having no communication because they don't have enough fingers for push to talk, or dead because they stopped to use push to talk.

haha its a golden rule on our teamspeak no voice activation.nothing worse than tards eating crisps or listening to eastenders on someone elses mic.especially when trying to hear footsteps.

also voice activation causes reverb for people who use speakers.

its not hard to press a button nor does it cause you to die unless you got two figures lol

I don't use push to talk but as above spent a lot of time making sure my pickup levels were good. My brother was a patient man haha

The only online game I play is GTAO, I have friends who have poorly optimised mics and we get the whole gamut of non gaming noises, I tell them I am muting them... Also my push to talk is a thumb button on my mouse.

Without PTT you can't have incidents of people mapping it to the same button as they have bomb release on in games like IL2, much hilarity ensued that would have been missed if voice activation or open had been used.

No, using push to talk puts you at more of a disadvantage in competitive games, pushing another button just to speak hinders you needlessly.

Proper setup voice activation and muting when eating food should be standard.

You are right though, listening to feedback is very irritating.

I have mine on capslock, it doesn't hinder me at all having to press it. I don't need to lift my fingers of wsad to also speak.

Will need to spend a weekend helping him get the mic configured properly it seems :S

WHat if you need to speak, sprint and suddenly crouch?

Nope, I use Voice Activation I find when I have to shout something out quick having to push a key before hand is too slow especially if I am trying to shoot at someone at the same time with accuracy, Just make sure the voice activation bar is up a little so the mic does not detect everything in the background !

Voice Activation and a high enough threshold, a mute hotkey and even have a mic switch if need to use it. I hated push to talk.

I use voice activation, I'm in a quiet room, and I just make sure it doesn't get triggered by mistake. Problems usually only occur with people who are using speakers or are in a noisy environment.

If you are someone who doesn't use push to talk and doesn't setup their mic properly then you are the kind of evil that can only be dealt with though fire.

Personally after 10,000's of hours put into games over the years have never had a situation where I've gone 'If only I hadn't been pushing that button to talk'. Given the state of gaming keyboards and mice these days there are a number of buttons you could choose that would have zero impact on your ability to carry out your normal functions, a thumb button on your mouse for example.

To be honest neither are right or wrong, all either require is for you to put a bit of thought into how to set the right one for you up. The only difference being that if you get the push to talk wrong it only really affects you, get the open mic wrong and you should be euthanized.

Sprint? crouch? Tab target? the bottom line is you have to do something extra.

We use open mic on our group, but as mentioned by many others we've all configured our activation levels correctly so you don't get feedback/game noise/keystrokes/mouse clicks/whatever.

What I do have is a mute self button. So if I know i'm going to be munching crisps or something for the next couple of minutes I can spare my group the horror of my mouth sounds.

Always used PTT. I'm sure my team don't want to hear me eating, drinking, talking to my son, cursing them and many other things that I say. Even singing along when I also have Spotify playing at times.

I always use the 'back' button on my mouse. No fiddly keys, having to resort to some finger gymnastics, just a press and I'm talking.

I use PTT and have it on mouse 3 (middle mouse) and have done since the early Ventrilo days. Doesn't hinder me in the slightest.

Push-to-talk is an absolute must in my opinion! I've lost count of how many times I've heard phone calls, dogs barking, or somebody vaping directly into the mic. It's easily the most irritating aspect of group chat! The notion that push-to-talk hinders competitive play is laughable! Just bind it to mouse 4 or something that doesn't commonly conflict with your existing bindings. It doesn't detract from the game at all!
