When will ssd's price fall

As title when do people expect ssd's to fall in price, im temted by one but cant really justify the price.
Expecialy as i was tempted when they were much cheaper.
 
As soon as they do i will be getting one, can not currently justify spending that much at the moment.
 
I will just be happy when we get 500gb drives for £30 :) but yes its a new thing basicly so its taking time to get bigger and better and more cost effective. But now its more available now and at a price people can actully afford for adecent size the tech is clearly growing so maybe soon it will be down better :).
 
i plan to get two intel 160gb and raid them when the new series come out, along with a sata 3 motherboard... i also cannot justify the price atm

They should also be this time round. They are bringing out the 160GB version, and a 300GB version to replace the current 80GB and 160GB. It's a straight forward replace (we think) so it should be similar prices, ie £160 for 160GB, and £300 for 300GB instead of current prices.

I thought Intel would be announcing the New SSD's at their IDF conference? In the roadmap it says slated for Q4 2010 are we still expecting them this year?

I'm holding off buying my rig till they hit :(
 
Yeah I've also been looking at some "decent" SSDs. I got a couple of Patriot PS-100 32gb and regret it. On the paper the patriots look good, but real world performance wasn't great. Will be ebaying these and waiting for the next price drop i think.

Never really thought about it like that to be honest.

My Intel 80GB is the best PC purchase I've ever made. It really is that good. I'm more than happy with it considering what I paid.

Still, cheaper is always better :)
 
Bit of a silly qeustion to be honest. SSD prices are falling all the time, just compare the current prices with the prices when the first SSDs were released.

Just did that, and generally they're the same, if not more expensive.

I bought a 128GB M225 on the day of release for 199inc. Crucial's current 128GB drive is £239. Ok, it's a newer drive, but capacity is the same, and it costs more.

The 240gig drives are again the same, or more expensive. They've only come down in price if you start comparing them from when they massively increased in price (my drive went from £199 to £289 at one point).
 
Crucial C300 is a SATA 3 6GBP/s drive which is a lot faster than M225 which is just SATA 2 even if they are both run on a SATA 2 interface.:cool:

Not massively faster though on sata II, only in the 4k read/write section.

And the bad news seem to be Intel's new chips not out until 1st quarter 2011 now so don't expect any major price drops until then.
 
It's interesting to note that all the predicted price drops on SSD drives turned out to be wrong. SSD prices have not fallen anywhere near as quickly as people were predicting (or hoping). Even an Anand article from August 2010 predicting $1/gig this year is likely to be way off the mark.

$1/gig isn't looking likely even in the next two years, if current trends continue. This has lead to predictions recently that SSD may not ever become mainstream, as HDD are still improving - becoming faster, quieter and ever cheaper.

Now this is just the observation of random authors indexed by Google... and it seems almost impossible to see accurately where SSD will end up. But what do you guys think? $1/gig likely or just a pipe-dream for now?
 
For the performance you get they are not that expensive. Just get an external HDD or a second HDD for your storage needs. Considering what we pay for a GPU, the SSDs are not that bad.
