Christmas presents are on their way for GPU noise fanatics...

The reference cooler on AMD’s R9 290 and 290X has taken a lot of heat (easy pun intended) since the cards debuted over the last month. We did a bit of asking around and stumbled onto quite a few interesting details about AMD’s channel presence. First off there won’t be a repeat of the 290’s cooler. AMD has learned from this incident and the word on the street is that the cooling engineers at AMD are a little more in touch with what reviewers and consumers alike expect from a $550 GPU.

Checks with AMD’s partners revealed that the AIBs are hard at work preparing their own versions of AMD’s R9 290(X) cards with new PCB designs and aggressive aftermarket coolers. With CES approaching quickly the AIB partners are rushing to have their own versions ready for the show at the latest. On the other end of the spectrum we heard a few people mention “before Christmas” as the due date for non-reference design from AMD’s partners. Either way we don’t have too long to wait for a Christmas present from AMD’s partners.

Shall ask more board partners this week on any more updates.

But if they were due in 2-3 weeks we'd have them on order and we don't. ;)

As I've said well be lucky to see any custom designs on the shelfs this year, I have a meeting with AMD this week and shall speak with board partners to see if there is any newer updates. :)

Hi there

So far the message is the same as I told you guys last month.

AMD have no plans to ship just parts yet until mid-end December. So that means the earliest we shall see custom design in stock shall be January, so same as what I said last month.

We might be able to get custom cards up for Pre-Order mid-end December with stock in January.

The only places which might get stock on the shelf end of December is China.

Thanks Mike306

You here it from me first, infact a whole month ago. Just some people did not believe....

I'd have been sold on the 290 if it came with a custom cooler. The fact of buying one then voiding the warranty fitting a custom cooler doesn't inspire me, plus after buying a custom cooler for £50-70, I might as well have bought a 780.

Decisions decisions...

umm no not really, i just paid £300 today for a Sapphire 290 from OCUK with BF4 + 2 other games, even if you kept the games and spent £70 on another cooler thats £370... if you sold the games, that would make the card insanely cheap. So no, your point is not valid im afraid.

I understand the warranty worries however, but OCUK have your back if you decide to mod your card with a better cooler. Win win really

I e-mailed Sapphire and MSI and they both allow the removal of the cooler, as long as the removal doesnt damage the card and it is re-fitted with the OEM cooler when you RMA it. Also many custom coolers fit multiple cards and the overclocking performance you gain from them is worth the extra cash.

So swings and round abouts really. I like the idea of after market GPU cooling, so something like an MK26 is appealing to me and i would have probably bought one if i wasn't already under water.

Here is a nifty little thing i spotted in the WC forum. It is a bracket to mount an AIO onto GPUs, with a fan to also cool down the VRMs and memory.

1) That was a special price for only a few r290 for only a few hours today only

2) You get 3 games with the 780 you can sell..;)

For how many years have us PC owners not liked loud fans on are GPU cards, and it taken AMD till now to notice this..

Plus just about every GPU review tests for fan DB noise and AMD never notice this..

Actually it was limited stock and the price was reduced by approx £30, regardless of that, 290 + BF4 + Silver ticket @ £330 > 780 with 3 games, period. Still cheaper, still better... i fail to see your logic.

Well the connector looks like the same one i have on my Antec Kuhler, which is also the same one on the NZXT and the Corsair coolers i think. However thats for an Nvidia card, would be nice to see if they make a 290 version, im just about to buy a Phantek Case with OCUK fitted WC, a 290 version of that would own as i could slap my 920 Kuhler straight onto it :) until i put it under water properly.

By the time you payed out extra for an aftermarket cooler it hardly any cheaper...
(It not cheap enough to be worth the hassle of having to remove the cooler and fit another one just to save a tenner or so)

And can't see why you think it would be better..

Ok so the cheapest 780 is £390, say you get £50 for the games (average) its cost you £340.

The Sapphire deal today was £300, say you get £50 for the games, its cost you £250, that gives you £90 to spend on an aftermarket cooler to match the price of a 780.... If the prices for an aftermarket cooler fluctuate between £30 to £80, and you hit the middle mark of £50, you are still paying less for the 290 and its a better card, period.

While i understand your point of view regarding having the hassle of modding it yourself, for the performance your going to get its well worth it. Also Sapphire released a BIOS upgrade for their card which sorted out the fans and heat etc, so its not as bad as people make out.

I just think its the better card all round when it comes to power per pound spent.
