When will the forums get a 'like' button?

You can't manage that with email or a telephone?

You can but Facebook is great for just a short comment to catch up with someone if you don't have time for a phonecall (or timezones make it awkward) or a proper email. I appreciate the next argument will probably be that if it's a friendship worth keeping then you'll make the time but as far as I'm concerned anything that makes it easier to keep in contact with friends that I might otherwise not speak to often (different lifestyles/goals/countries/whatever) is a boon. There are a number of people who I'm not necessarily hugely close to in terms of feeling the need to contact them every week but I feel that my life would be the poorer if I didn't have some form of contact with.

I'd rather see reputation meters, it's a good addition to a lot of forums i frequent. It helps you see who is helpful and who isn't, would be a handy way of pointing out the ati or nvidia fanboys in the graphics section as they would be negative repped for their constant plugging of their particular brand.....maybe even lessen the fanboy nature.

I've never really liked the idea of reputation meters - it's always struck me as a bit of a popularity contest. That's not to say that some people won't deserve the glowing reputation that they've acquired but equally it would require reset fairly regularly to ensure that people don't just live on past reputation as once you've got say 10k+ reps or whatever then it's going to be pretty difficult to lose them even if you consistently give rubbish advice. It also may give the impression that knowledge in one area where you'd rightly be "repped" transfers to another - suppose for a second you know lots about CPUs but ventured into another area of the forums and said that you should feed a dog bars of chocolate - that's absolutely terrible advice but someone just looking at the reputation might think they know what they're talking about.

Obviously in that example you've still got to use your judgement but that's the whole reason I don't see the point, you should always exercise your own judgement as to the merits of a poster's advice rather than relying on the shortcut of what other people think of them.

Very good point, I guess the current rep/thanks system in it's current form wouldn't be appropriate for what this forum would need, i have an idea of what would work but i lack both the skills and time to make such a thing, nor do i care enough about such a thing to make one :D

My idea of it would be to have "area rep" in your profile which worked out an overall rep which went up a far more minimal amount which was the rep people see next to your avatar, so to have a huge amount of rep points you'd have to have a lot of rep from many forum sections, but people could see what areas you had gained most rep in. Along those lines anyway, you get the jist of where im going but obviously no one will probably ever bother to make such a thing.

What might be useful is a slashdot style rating system. If you have never visited slashdot then check them out.
The ratings should be applied to the entire thread rather than individual posts otherwise gaps would appear in the conversation.

Except slashdot moderating requires metamoderating and is a whole big mess of its own.

It works with a million users, just about, but how many active and willing users do we have?

No it would be the opposite, the fanboys would rate down every helpful person who said (with correct reason) to buy an ati/nvidia card, and the nvidia ones would always rate up the nvidia fanboys and down the ati and vis versa.

You can rate a thread if you want to so why add anything else?

Why do people randomly start justifying why they have a Facebook account as soon as Facebook is mentioned

Someone said Facebook was a waste of time. Someone said it wasn't and gave their reason.

How is that random or even a bad thing on a discussion forum?

Wait, you mean a 'like' button that posts to your facebook page, like what you see on news sites etc? (its even on trade-it for adverts!)?

It's an internet forum, you come here, have a quick read or search for something specific, post a couple of times something and then go away. If you want to see like/dislike buttons and all sorts of pointless additions then you are spending too much time here. The interface is minimal and sufficient for purpose, no more stuff are needed.
