When will we get 16cm fans?

As a rule I only use 12cm fans in my case. Is there any reason why manufacturers aren’t making a push toward larger fan standards? Is drawing only 12volts limiting? Is 16cm simply to large to fit into most cases?

Standard ATX case width and layout only allows for 120mm fans at rear I/O shield.

The front / elsewhere could be easily adapted or modded for 160mm fans.

It's only recently that 120mm fans have been adapted as the 'norm' I would think it will be a while before they change.

i managed to fit a 140mm fan into my eclipse but it required some modification to the fan adapter. It is a fair bit quieter than the akasa amber i had in there before it plus has better airflow.

That's true, but even when 60mm was the 'norm' you could still purchase 120mm fans, although I would imagine not many were sold.

I was thinking about the low noise/ high CFM implications of even larger fans.

Years ago when I was using a K6-550, the only fan I had that worked was just a normal desk fan prop'd to blow right into the case, that was about 200mm :D

I think the idea is for everything to be more compact now, 120 are just popular because they can be quiet. 160 is just too big to be popular when people are wanting smaller smarter cases instead of the old giant tower case

I guess as fans get bigger the motors have to be more powerful and therefore noisier, somewhat negating the benefits. Of course using exotic lightweight materials could help with that so who knows. Case size is an issue although i'd like to see 140mm as a standard sized mount for side facing fans that don't have the limited space that front/rear fans have. (BTW, the new CM Stacker has mounts for 4x140mm side facing fans!)

Here's one for you: ExtremEngine 3T
I removed the link for the website, since the moderators here are so grunty...
Anyway, it includes a 25cm fan :D . That's quite nifty! :p

Wow - I most definitely want one!!!

Look at the size of that 250mm fan!

Side 1 x 25cm fan
Speed: 550~1000 RPM
Air Flow: 90.97~162.82 CFM (MAX)
Noise: 19.54~35.28 dB(A)

Anyone know who makes the fan? Searched around and only thing I found was from a company in China talking about joblots in the hundreds

Could really use one of those on the side of my little Tower! :D

Erm more importantly though how the hell are you getting a system that requires much more than 2x120mm fans to cool? As long as you fit a GPU cooler that exhausts out the rear rather than into the case its not hard to keep a case cool. Add on a CPU cooler that blows towards the rear such as the Akasa 120mm one and you have very little apart from the hard disks to worry about.

Getting good airflow and cooling from 2x120mm fans is not hard.

Ever heard about overclockers? We like it cool

I agree that 2 x 120mm fans is generally sufficient, but you've got to be impressed by 90CFM with less than 20dB(A) of noise. That would be the only case fan needed, and 20dB(A) is seriously quiet. With that sort of setup you may be able to replace active cooling solutions for passive ones on several components (at least the NB and maybe GFX).
