I remember first seeing the internet around a friends house, back when ISDN 64 was the "fast as lightning" thing, and ADSL was barely even a thought...

I remember the page taking ages to load, and I remember the thing I said was "well, is that it" I not sure what I was expecting, but sure was not expecting the virtual bland pages of the internet back then... of course, it did not take me long until I learned to love the net... but when I first saw it, I was so unimpressed lol.

Anyone else (mostly old time users, not newer ones) that felt the same?

Back in the days i first went "online" (via 9600baud modem) BBS systems and compuserves WINCIM were about the only things available, the "internet" didn't really exist.

So in answer to the original question, I never really first "saw" the internet, it evolved around me. So its all normal to me, and always was.

It took me ages to get into it. My mate showed me some BBS he connected to (with the Amiga 500 no less) but I thought it was cack. 5 years later I was still unconvinced and it was only when I took a job with an ISP I realised it was here to stay.

Back in the day of AOL dial up, shockingly slow and painful - the first thing I used the internet for was to look at Sheffield United scores and the league table back in 1997 I'd say.

edit: oh and the joe cartoons and jib jab site probably made the internet take off for me and my friends.

Yahoo in 99 with a 36k modem, uhh their email, then I got to talking to an American lass that send me quite a few of her pictures

Much the same here, but the best thing was a relationship from Compuserve's old online dating thing ;)

@Tru, please tell me just what is that in the middle of the Saltire in your sig please?

My first online experiences were with AOL on a Psion Surfboard 36.6kbps modem and your first impressions aren't really of the internet as much as of AOL's content/chatrooms which I really liked due to the sense of community. The actual internet was meh, but then I loaded up NBA.com and was blown away by the website design ;)

rofl, it's 4 hands. why, what did your filthy mind picture? :D

Can't remember much of the old skool interweb.. but we were online to various BBS's before it.

edit: coming back to me now.. "Compuserve" <shudder>

I think I was about 11 when I first saw it at my cousin's house and I thought something along the lines of OMFGWTFBBQLOLZTHISISAWESOME, although presumably I thought it in regular words back in the old days.

[pedantic mode]The internet did exist, the web did not[/pedantic mode]

Sorry about that. I'll give myself 10 lashes for that little outbreak. :o

I'm not sure I can remember what I first thought of the internet. I remember I was first online with compuserve but I must have only been about 7 or 8 years old. Guess it can't have been that special since it didn't really stick in my mind. I do remember using AOL though. I waited 2 hours to download a Duke3D demo. It was only about 6MB! I also remember I used to hang out in a Star Trek chat room type thing

56k was first for me and it was 300ping on mohaa. Got broadband and loved online gaming!

omg?? I remember mohaa like it was released 3 years ago.... oh wait.

First time I *saw* the internet was across a class room on a Mac *spits* running a 9600 modem and using Netscape - no idea which ISP.

Think the first thing me and my mates did was Porn pictures followed by certain IRC chat rooms (a/s/l?)

I was in about 12 i think, was selected to test the schools internet and see if it would be any use to any other students, the first thing i got off the internet was guitar tab.

hmm I really cannot remember that well :/ I just remember searching for ps1 tips and tricks back in 99 and always ending up on cdrom-guide as a result.
