When you order a takeaway for pick up…

The best one I had was that someone made an order, it was around 2 bags’ worth and I handed it over. I got a call later telling me I gave him the wrong half. Apparently he went half with his friend and one half was his and he got the wrong food.

I didn’t know mind reading is a thing.

I'm picturing two blokes sitting down with the 2 takeaway bags opening them and being like
"wtf I ordered chicken this is duck they screwed the order up!?"
"No way dude me to they've given me chicken instead of duck what the ****"
" I'm gonna call and complain"

Have you reported them?

No.

If not, then why not?

I'm not a complete dick. I'm not compelled to report them, I'm more compelled to use another establishment that doesn't use tax evading tactics that are so totally obvious. I think my approach probably hits them harder financially than the call to HMRC would ever do.

What happens when someone turns up with card only or worse a mobile phone only so can't even use a ATM if there is one nearby

I've did this in the past and had to go to the ATM while my food gets cold, just so they can swerve their taxes. Yea, it's annoying AF.

It's probably not tax but just the card fees

Yea, I just had a look at the link @Bear posted (thanks BTW) and I could see that a small business would want to avoid that. However having acknowledged that, even our local ice cream shop has card payment facility. It's probably very easy to increase prices by a few pence across the board to absorb the cost.

I agree it's probably less about tax evasion and more about a business failing to grasp that times have moved on and cash is less popular now. It'll probably take a few people to walk away without paying until they get the prompt to modernise - I'm sure the tax evading tactics have also evolved to keep up. :p

Yeah but an ice cream business has whining kids overriding a empty wallet.

Vs a drunk with his card

You do know by having a card machine it costs you £30 a month or more simply to have it on premises?

Unless they have cancelled it and it is purely for show. As he says it has technical issues. So they have one on site.

No.

So you like to moan about it on here yet not do the right thing.

I bet you also moan about public services being under provided. Pot holes, bin collections, etc.

What are you, the police? I'd just leave them to it.

What does the police have to do with this? Reporting crimes is everyone's civic duty. I bet if you were robbed or had someone pull a knife on you, you would want their help but here you are with the attitude that you shouldn't help others.

Bare in mind the impact on legit business owners who are paying their taxes. You cannot really compete with someone on price if they are dodging VAT and income tax.

.

So yeah it's canceled, money laundering would be happy to have a card machine

If they are wanting a lot of cash income they likley also have illegals working there especially back of house. They will need to be paid cash in hand and it's common for Chinese takeaways.

Could possibly have even been trafficked which is yet another crime.

You're being silly for 2 reasons:

  1. There is no right or wrong about it, there's acceptable and unacceptable. It's perfectly acceptable not to "report it".
  2. HMRC would laugh me off the phone if I attempted to report a broken card reader in a Chinese takeaway. That's exactly why I'm discussing it here and not with HMRC.

I bet you also moan about public services being under provided. Pot holes, bin collections, etc.

The search facility is your friend; be assured you won't find me moaning about any of that.

And if they are making meth that's another crime, and if they are making nuclear weapons, that's another crime. There's no evidence of any of this of course.

Reporting a business for accepting money in exchange for goods or services is laughable.

Refusing to take card though is a sign something dodgy is going on. Every legit takeaway takes card even mobile fish and chip vans.

If back of house don't speak a lick of English and look fresh off the boat it's pretty obvious why.

Not complete fantasy like your breaking bad scenario.

And yes a lot of card providers charge a subscription fee as well as transaction fees. They are all different obviously but not everyone shops around and usually just goes with their bank or banks recommended provider.

"What name do you leave when ordering a takeaway"?

Well first I conduct an 11-point spot check of their staff's immigration status and written English, then I check 6 years of Companies House records and ask if anyone in the building hangs the toilet paper the wrong way. If there are tax dodgers or TP deviants present I give them a fake name and turn up wearing a moustache and nose disguise".

Or maybe they just don't want to deal with cards, after all cash is a legal and legitimate form of payment. To label businesses that don't accept card as dodgy or not legit is baseless.

You've posted a link an 8 year old article that shows that particular business was bad, you can't tar every takeaway with the same brush purely because they accept a legal and normal way to pay for goods.
