Where can I get a massive download line?

Just wondering, more out of curiosity than anything else.

Currently scouting out hosting for a site I might buy (it's alright mods, I won't mention it :D), and have been surprised by the prices.

Not particularly bothered by them, since thats the rate, but i'm surprised at the spec of the server machines. A couple hundred a month is getting you a nice amount of bandwidth, but the server isn't any faster than my pc (unless ive missed something obvious).

Are there any places were you can plug your own pc and just use the bandwidth or am I missing something very very obvious?

How interesting.

In-fact, can I be a mod for the day please?. I promise I'll only ban people that annoy me.

You don't need a PC much faster than your home one to serve internet traffic, a HTTP request uses very little CPU. Bandwidth in a DC is the big bonus to serving things from there.

Look into cloud computing tho, grab a trial from these guys and see what you think, lets you customise your package (CPU, Mem, Data useage, etc) exactly so you're getting the right thing for your monies...

You can purchase a server and have it co-located, yes.

That's a pretty generic comment, I look after sites that have been brought to their knee's because of under spec'd servers, it entirely depends on traffic.

You are better off, imo, purchasing a vps or a physical server and have it completely managed by the host.

Hugely fast processors and TB's of Hard Drive space isn't really required for hosting websites (Personal/Small Business ones anyway) as there isn't really going to be enough requests (Again, I'm assuming there isn't going to be thousands of users at the same time...but what do I know it might be huge ;)) but anyway, Bandwidth is your biggest concern.

And Virgin Media 50Mb line is perfect. No limits, however VM (Virgin Media) have a GREAT Down Stream service but their Up Stream is slower than 2nd Class Royal Mail.

The specs might look the same as your PC, but you're getting more than that. More resilience for a start. If HDD/NIC/RAM fails, this should be fairly transparent to your users on a dedicated server. The server will be housed in a fully supported datacentre and will be actively monitored to avoid issues occurring (and fixing them as soon as they do).

So in short, its not just the hardware and bandwidth you're paying for, its also the support/maintenance as well.

Meh if you're hosting big then N+1 architecture wins anyway....

I'd go with 10 mediocre spec webservers with a loadbalancer sitting in front of them over 1 amazing one anyday :D

But on elastichost cloud hosting, if the node your server is currently running on fails it is seemlessly transferred to another node in the cloud... Therefore 100% uptime :D

Upload speed is what you'll want - not download. Just remember that even one person with broadband loading a large file or images from your web space will easily max out your <1mbit upload, making your site extremely slow for other visitors.

Hardware failure is typically very rare to be honest. After RAID and redundant PSUs, you're looking at very little else that can fail. The most common sort of failure is in software (OS, Apache/IIS, database, the actual application itself).

Apologise, didn't specify, I know that consumer lines are woefully inadequate for running a server, I was just wondering how the cost was split for dedicated servers.

Found a decent server (ish) with the following specs:

Intel i7 930, 12gb ram, 1tb hdd with unmetered 100mb line with 5 usable ipv4 address + cpanel and whatnot.

He is looking for $135 a month, but is willing to put me on a cheaper package til I need the full speed.

Seems decent enough specs, major company, was referred to by a friend who works in the industy.

100% Full Management:
24/7/365 Fast Support
Free reboot
Free console access
Control Panel installation and configuration
Firewall CSF installation and maintenance
DDOS mitigation
Nightly Backups
Script installations
/tmp hardening
Kernel updates
Resource monitoring
Free migration

That spec is far too high for a webserver. A 1/3 of the spec is more than enough.

Its going to be used for people streaming videos, surely it will need some processing power behind it, especially since it will be geting 120k+ minimum views a month and will hopefully be rising a fair bit more.

If it is to high, then i'll definitely drop down to a Pentium D or whatever else is on offer.

Had a quote for a 200mb over a 1gb carrier uncontended internet pipe for work for £16k per annum with no setup fee, opting for 2 of them for resilience (comes to about £40k+ per year when you add in termination hardware)! You can then plug whatever you like into 'em!

I rent dedis and VPS from rapidswitch - the middle teir VPS would be fine for you - <£30/m and plenty fast enough for all but the most demanding website.

EDIT: Actually if your hosting what I think - then you'd need one of their mid-range dedis a VPS might be pushing it a bit :D
