Why is it the moment a site goes down everyone says DOS attack? They're not as common as all that, and besides which "database error" isn't likely to be what you'd see anyway as that would imply they've identified the database servers IP that the forum front end servers are using. Odds of that being a on a public internet-accessible IP are rather small.
