Where do you get your tyres from?

Does anyone know of an easy way to see if your tyres need replacing without going to a garage to check. 1.6mm isn't very easy to check with a ruler!

If you have a Zodiac or Pound Land store in your town you can pick up one of those tread meter things for 99p-£couple

On the note of tyres, can anyone tell me what would be the max size I'd be able to fit on the bmw 16" alloys ? the stock tyres are 205/55 and was wondering if it would be best to keep that size or go for something different if it will fit ?

I'm sure BMW spent a lot of time deciding tyre/wheel sizes. Feel free to undo that work :)

When I get tyres, I usually gang up with other people who also need them and get a bulk buy from somewhere (ring round with a shopping list). Last time I bought new tyres we got 17 :D Different sizes, but all from the same place. Got a VERY good price.

I always get mine from Costco. They only do Michelin, but they are much cheaper fitted than anywhere else I've seen - only charge £2 a corner for valve, fit and balance. Twice a year they have a 20% off any 4 tyres, so the last 225/40/18 Pilot Sport PS2's cost me £93 a corner.

Oh should prob add my above only works if you have the opportunity to know you need tyres fairly soon. Punctures etc. mean new tyre straight away!

You and your valid points!!

I actually want to get tyres asap so will get some 205/55/16/V as I can keep the best of the current 4 as a spare on a steelie for punctures, the 15" "space saver" is not going to do any good on 16" wheels :p

no i dont mean that. I mean how do you get the benifit of a £80 tyre over a £40 tyre. And is the difference that big?

In an emergency situation, you may well see a difference - in one tyre test I read the difference in braking distance from 70mph in the wet between the best performance tyre and the worst was a staggering 2 car lengths.

And by 'worst' it was a reputable branded performance tyre as they only tested the 5 'top' tyres anyway. A dodgy cheapo tyre would have been even worse.

Used to get them off mytyres.co.uk if they were the common aftermarket sizes (i.e. 195/45/15 or 205/40/17).

Now frinds of the family have set of a new centre (Tyreworks, Market Drayton) so i have been visiting them when i need to :)

Whats a decent in the middle range brand of tyre for a 195/55/15 then?

Hankook?

i need two fronts.

Probably will work out about £15 cheaper a tyre than the 55 profile.
Would a pair of 55 profile ones look odd if I relaced my two fronts with 50's? I can get much better tyres for less money so that would be nice :D AFAIK on a 195 width thats about 10mm less tyre depth?

For the cost, i'd be going for either Toyo's (Proxes T1-R) or Goodyear (Eagle F1).

I can barely notice it on my Focus when i replaced the fronts for 50's, £43 fitted each for a P6000 rather than £59. I think the 60 profile were only slightly more than a 50 and would probably do ride comfort a favour. I went for P6000's as they seem to last a good while unlike Toyos's and I love how well it drives for an OEM family hatch.

Theres loads of choice in those sizes no need to go down to a Hankook.

I used eTyres a few months ago as they have a mobile fitter - which was very handy at the time. Their prices were excellent too in comparison to other online retailers - £108 each for 225/45/17 Sport Contact 2).
I had to change my two rears (same size) and went to a local independant who did each tyre for £90..a considerable saving over two tyres.

My local Honda dealer however was an incredible rip off. They quoted £168 EACH for Pirelli p6000 EXCLUDING Vat. I was gobsmacked - theres a good reason people don't recommend car dealers for tyres!

Well i was going to get some Toyo's, i asked my local ATS about price beating blackcircles and they did. When i got there they tried to take my wheel off but the lock nut kept slipping so they couldnt get the wheel off! good job, there toyos where not Toyo Proxes but toyo RZ3's, totally differnet tread pattern.

So now i have to try get my locking bolt out, any ideas?

Every single time I've been to get tyres there has been someone there who just shrugged when they were asked about the locking wheel nut key, and everytime they just drilled it out there and then. Suprised they didn't for you.
