Where does one go from retail management?

yeah, we've all seen your pool:p

Agree entirely though, you can make a few strategic shifts and find yourself in a short space of time in an entirely different position/earning scale etc.

You could target a retailer that has the scale to permit more interesting opportunities in the business end of it and be very honest in interview that is where you want to end up.

You could perhaps look at doing some sort of business degree via the OU part time which would presumably give more weight to any application to the corporate suggestions that Magnolia has made?

My wife's doing an MBA through them at the mo and having done and MBA myself at a US business school I am very impressed with the OU's business programmes. I think they have to try a bit harder than physical universities!

It's not uncommon to move into Corporate after being store-based. Logistics, Buying, Supply Chain Management are all options if you have any interest in those areas. Once you're in a Head Office environment then things really open up.

I went Assistant Store Manager (Sainsburys) then to M&S in supply chain and then Woolworths, PC World and Homebase as a Buyer, Senior Buyer and Category Manager respectively. I'd had enough of retail so moved into Health Procurement.

Agreed.

I took the same route - Working for Michells and Butlers. Went from Bar Staff, Team Leader, Assistant Manager - Then move to supply chain / commercial at head office :)

I was in you exact position about 6 years ago. I became a lifeguard just to get out. I'm now studying for a MSc in Environmental Science :p

So no real suggestion than do something that you want to!

Your signature on the internet is clickable and it leads to a page of the statistics of your activities on an online game, and underneath that are your usernames on the other two online gaming networks, so people can become your 'friend'.

Opinion void

wow you had to stoop so low as insulting my sig???? :roll eyes:

well while we are on that subject, your signature is of some guy with mud all over his face, wtf is up with that?

Anyway enjoy the prospect of looking for a job, with no doubt plenty of NVQ's you obtained whilst working in retail. Im sure they are transferable into a professional field :p

If you enjoy what you do now, I would be looking to move to a larger store or deputy at a supermarket, that sort of thing.

Right, I have applied to do Social Work at Portsmouth, Chichester and Sussex. I went to my interview at Portsmouth and UCAS updated the day after with an unconditional offer from them. Im supposed to have an interview at chi on Friday, but have heard nothing from Sussex.

Being a mature student I have no idea about UCAS and wont be waiting for results etc. As Portsmouth is my number one choice, being a short train ride away, I see no point in bothering with the others.

Is this right? however UCAS wont let me accept as I have no decisions from the others, can I get ucas to cancel my others and just accept Portsmouth?

someone please tell me if im doing it wrong lol

Social work, lol.

Looks like it's from Smokin' Aces to me.

But more generally, there's no real need for the antagonism here. PardonTheWait is looking for a bit of advice with a reasonable request, the mocking isn't necessary.

PardonTheWait: it's not something I've done having never really worked in retail but I'd have thought the experience of managing staff would constitute a useful transferrable skill, there's probably also some value in having to maintain the business records as evidence of organisational skills and a measure of financial acumen. If you don't want to work in an office role then do you have any idea what you would like to do?

My career path has gone like this:

Warehouse - Waiter - Bar Staff - Bar Manager - Moved to an Engineering firm as an assistant surveyor - Surveyor - Team Leader - Project Manager. Salary wise it's increased by £14,500 between my assistant surveyor role and where I am now which includes a company car.

It's hard going, I started at the bottom with no experience in a very junior role. All my progression has been down to hard work and learning a lot of new skills, but it can be done :)

As others have said, with a bigger chain you would most likely move up further to an Area Manager or something.

While I don't work in retail, I believe the bigger companies in our country tend to hire people with degrees and business experience for their Head Offices. You only need to watch some of those Undercover Boss shows to see how out of touch many businesses actually are with their retail outfits and the shop floor. Given what a squeeze finding jobs is in the current climate, you would probably be best retraining.

I know some people on good money waiting tables.

From the Metro last month I think,

As with anything, there's waiting tables, then there's waiting certain tables in certain establishments.
