where is 8.1 start button

Use classicshell. Its great and free. I never have to see the metro screen ever again. Have it setup so that it logs straight into the desktop. Have disabled the charms bar too.

I don't even use the start menu in Windows 7..

I have a few programs pinned to the taskbar and anything else, I open using Run

A lot of people however didn't like XP->Vista but are fine with Windows 7 even though in many ways there isn't a huge difference between Vista and 7.

There are a quite a few changes you don't see between vista and 7. For instance vista was really bad at handling network traffic. Quite a lot of problems started to appear once you were using it on a domain, usually with profiles and other things getting randomly corrupt. It was also really bad at memory management.

But yea, you can get the proper start menu back in 8/8.1 with classic shell (which is free and just as good, if not better than the paid for ones). But once you do that you might as well just stick with 7, 8 is basically the same with more annoyances.

Right hand click on the new button and you get a list of very useful options. I'm loving 8.1, although you need to invest some time in setting up the Metro screen so you have everything you need in place.

I use Startisback and paid the $3. I'm sure metro start screens are fine for some people but it really annoys me to have it full screen. Seems to work pretty much like 7 now.

I've used Start8 to get the classic feel back from day one. I don't like and don't use any metro stuff and I have my PC setup so that I never have to use or see the metro interface at all! I came from WinXP straight to Win8.1 and really like it.

Unless you have a touch screen or you simply have to have the latest product I don't really see the benefits of Windows 8 over Windows 7. I had it installed on my machine for a while and the only noticeable improvement was the boot time which was impressively fast considering I'm not using an SSD.

Well i have an SSD and can tell you that from pressing the power on button to being able to open a tab in Chrome browser takes 9 seconds ;)
It also shuts down in 3 seconds.

Its also nice being able to create 30Gb system images in under a minute.

It's funny really. My boot times aren't much off that but 9 seconds for me is still too long to start up. I get impatient if my machine takes more than a couple of seconds to resume of standby.

Well 9sec from being off to being useable is a lot better than the 4 minutes my XP machine managed on a daily basis.

I only have an i3 processor with 1600Mhz DDR3 on my Win8.1 machine but im sure if i had a high end i7 with faster ram the times would be more like 5/6sec...

I've managed to give it a longer chance, and while i'm still no fan of the new 'start menu' - as it's just a load of jumbled boxes or my organised and pretty much empty screen - I do find the whole OS to be faster. Start up/shut down seems to be at least twice as fast compared to when I was running on 7.

Still not a fan, but I can live with it as I can still get it to function the way I want*.

*Power down, Start up Mac. ;)

just install start8 and you wont have to see those tiles anymore.

I don't understand this. I have Windows 7 and an SSD and it boots to a usable browser in around 20 seconds. Put it another way, those seconds pass without even noticing since you might look at something else, dock your phone or plug in a cable or whatever.

Are you really saying 7 seconds is too long?!

Why not just use sleep which is instant off and instant on?

We will all have to get used to the new lay out eventually.

No we just mod it back to how it's supposed to be, productive and efficient, ie Win 7 style. Not the worlds biggest abortion of a desktop UI in history. Changing something that works is always bad as it takes time to learn a new interface for no benefit to the user.

Windows 95 did that, it's called standby mode and it's better because the previous session is saved.

Your opinion (which you are quite entitled to), but not everybody agrees with you (me included), as you'll be aware of from the many threads on Windows 8.

My Start8 trial ran out the other day on my laptop and it feels like I'm using the PC with one hand tied behind my back again. Don't really want to pay for it as I'm not likely to have this machine for much longer and I'm sticking with Win7 on my PC until MS figure out what they're actually doing with Windows, so I'll check out Classic Shell in the meantime.
