Do I believe that somewhere in this vast universe life exists outwith our own planet? Yes.

Do I believe we will ever meet intelligent life out there? No. The distances involved are too great and then there is no guarantee that we will even exit in the same time frame.

I think this is the biggest factor. Our existence is just a blink of the eye, a infinitesimally small fraction of time in relation to the existence of the universe.

Absolutely, I can't quantify how big this universe is in any meaningful context when I have its size explained to me, let alone other galaxies & universes as well!

For me it is bonkers to think otherwise - How close we are to finding meaningful organisms well that may not be for us to find out.

The planet discovered is 4 light years away. That means a greeting between us wiuld take 8 years. If there was intelligent life there then I think we would have communucated.
I do believe we are not alone. The issue is that in order to communicate the beings on any two planets must coincide intelligently. We have been able to send/receive signals for about 100 years, which is a fraction of the Earth's existance of 4.5 billion years. So, at shich point is this planet? There is a very small window of time by which communication is possible.

Actually this new planet is to us as close as we can get without leaving our own Solar System. We might find life on one of Saturn's or Jupitar's moons but for now Proxima Centauri b, is looking promising.

As Freefaller mentioned, considering where we are in relation to all the other stars, galaxies etc and the numbers involved then I have no doubt that we are "not alone".

There is life out there somewhere...

Why don't they make contact? Why would they? Why would they contact a civilization that is hell bent on destroying it's planet and fighting amongst themselves? :( I'd certainly stay well clear if I was looking down on that kind of mess.

I am certain there is life. I am also pretty certain it is most likely to be a hell of a long way from us. Yes, they may be technologically advanced enough to cover that distance given time but then they'd have to know where they were going first which given our broadcasts is quite unlikely. Any civilisation that has solved those problems would be as likely to be as interested in us as we are in ants. And maybe equally as ambivalent about killing us! If they are that advanced then they could have already visited us or observed us but have a means of obfuscating their activity.

We are only 100 or so years beyond the point where we could knowingly send signals out into space.

This 100 years is a nothing when compared with the vast age of the cosmos. There may well be other life intelligent life out there, but it might simply just not be able to communicate with us. If they are only 100 years further back than us in terms of evolution, they may not have the ability to know we are looking, or send a reply.

Possibly we are so far behind in terms of evolution that we are viewed as nothing more than a curiosity, something to be studied or enjoyed, or perhaps even a pest? No more able to communicate with the aliens as an amoeba is to talk to us.

They are likely out there, and just totally ignoring us as we happen to be irrelevant.

The fact we exist would mean that life definitely exists else where in the Universe given how big it is. If you're voting no you probably aren't fully thinking about how unimaginably vast the Universe actually is. There's approximately 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Stars in just the Universe we actually know exists.

also - how many species have died because of planetary events.

Had a dream once I was on a planet that had been destroyed and I was dying in space - watching the planet break apart, wasn't even afraid - just amazed at the sight I was seeing.

Don't think I'll ever forget that one :S

Given the size of the universe, I don't believe for a second that we're the only sentient species in it.

I'm just sorry that I won't get to see/meet it, and won't experience space travel as being the norm.

Conversely though we're fortunate enough to live in a time where we live on Earth and can go see wonders of nature, Space travel would probably be incredibly boring for the most part. Even travelling at close to Light speed you'd be looking at spending years on a Spacecraft to travel between Stars. In the future entire generations might be born, live and die aboard generation ships.
