Where is STEAM headed?

I avoid it when I can, insane amounts of bandwidth required to download games, if you've just reformatted then your doomed. Had problems with the client saying something in the registry has been damaged or some bs like that and it wouldn't start. Plus you can't sell second hand games or get refunds. Then there is the slow servers...

My big problem with it is they are very lazy when it comes to
anti cheating by the time they block hacks new hacks are out.

There is a backup option. I do this every month or so. I like having all the games in one place. You dont have to worry about patching, as its all done for you.

Cant think of any other devs that still add new features/fixes past the 1st year or so after release. its not like we pay a sub, but understand how frustating it can be, dont make much financial sense spending everday updating/blocking hacks tho.

Really Like steam, only games I bother installing after a format, would like to see some sort of loyalty scheme.

Its moved on from when I was beta testing it but still suffers from the single location login problem just like most games do when the servers are down.

Ive purchased games from it as well as EA link and like the alternative to a loud spinning Dooovd :p

Microsofts Xbox marketplace is another clone and I can see Steam being a rival in the future if they continue to progress

I find steam good most of the time, cheap games, fast download speeds and even the choice of paying by paypal. Valves games on it are very good, especially all the source games, and they are updated relatively regularly.

I tried the steam community beta, and I didn't really like it, I think they are trying to do a bit too much with it, community websites and chat rooms, just no need for it imo. The beta was also very buggy, I hope they sort it out for the full release.

I sort of dislike the fact that you need to load up steam to play the steam games, I don't mind it myself as I play quite a lot of them regularly, but I think if I only played like one games like HL2, I would find it annoying. I also disliked how when the steam master servers went down because of some storm in the US you couldn't even play single player games in offline mode.

It has it's pros and cons but overall I don't mind using it :), and I like how the games are cheap and Valve keep releasing good quality games.

I'm still not a fan, I want to have the ability to sell my games. If I buy a game I don't like it what can I do? I cannot get a refund and I cannot sell it because it's joined to my account.

I would never buy anything other than half life 2 and the mods via steam
if i were you.

Best part of it for me is ability to re-download your games, have em tied to your account, although I back all of them up to cd nowadays, still a nice feature that's personally proved usefull to me over the years.

Also nice being able to impulse buy some pretty decent/cheap games at 2AM in the morning :p

Don't mind steam at all now, but hated, I repeat absolutely hated it when it first came out though, now that it pretty much works, I got nothing to complain about. Really just needs some big titles to kick some life back into it at the moment, orange box can't come soon enough for me personally.

And with titles like Left 4 Dead I'm actually looking forward to seeing the new community options in action.

I completely disagree. The Community idea is a great idea. And so far I've not had a single problem while using the Beta version. In fact, I find it less buggy than the 'Friend's network used to be (especially compared to back in the day, when Friends almost never worked).

I don't like it. I don't think users who legally buy a game should HAVE to use Steam in order to play it, it's wrong and just encourages piracy as the legally buying user always gets screwed over.

Can you elaborate on this please? It doesn't make sense to me.

In what way does Steam encourage piracy?
In what way is a legal buyer screwed over any differently to any other game?
Saying that you don't like the fact you HAVE to use Steam to play certain games, is like saying you don't like the fact you HAVE to have a CD/DVD drive to play certain games. What is it you actually don't like?

Also Steam has quite a few problems.

Like?

I can probably explain.

In what way does Steam encourage piracy?

If people have problems with steam not working properly or don't want to use steam, they will pirate the game if it isn't avalible in shops.

You can't sell your 2nd hand games, it's also possible they could ban your steam account.

Probably having to have something installed on his pc wasting rescources, and possibly doing dubious things as well.

I'm also a fan of Steam...wasn't perfect when it started but it's just so handy that I'd buy every game off it if I could. I'm just surprised no other developer/publisher has followed Valve's lead (apart from EA...but Link is just so bad).
I suppose music/video distribution is possible through Steam, but I think there's enough established channels for that already.

i use direct2drive for my games as you can them back them up incase your HD fails I presume STEAM has that covered and you can back up the games you buy? I recently bought DOD source through them but haven't looked into how to make a backup copy yet.

That's like saying if people lose their CD's they will pirate the game. So CD's actually encourage piracy, as it's easy to lose a CD.

I take the point about selling 2nd hand games.

But your Steam account is only going to get banned if you are either cheating, or sharing an account. It's not in Valve's interest to ban an account unnecessarily.

I've run Steam on an old Athlon 800MHz system and not seen any noticable drop in performance due to any resources used by Steam. Not an issue imo. Not sure what you mean by 'dubious things'.

I accept that Steam isn't perfect. But imo the benefits outway the drawbacks.

Well you probably still legally 'own' the rights to use a game you've purchased if you happen to lose the medium upon which it was stored.
