Beyond the cost of living crisis, there are many challenging issues facing people across the UK right now. From economic uncertainty to social and political divisions, this is clearly a difficult time for the country.

In the face of these mounting pressures, at what point would you feel compelled to take more active measures such as protesting or going on strike? There still seems to be a very restrained "keep calm and carry on" mentality among many. It's hard to say what it would really take for most people to break decisively with this traditional British reticence and take to the streets or walk out in protest.

But it's an important question to consider - what level of economic pain, social injustice or political dysfunction would it take for you personally to abandon resignation and make your frustrations known through direct action? And what does the seemingly high threshold here say about the state of activism and unrest in modern Britain?

Politics used to be interesting in this country, but recently it's just McDonalds meals for the left and right. There are no new ideas and no boldness, no leadership and all this culture war crap. I'm not saying "they are all the same" but I am saying none of them on offer are outstanding.

When I used to talk politics years ago it was a niche subject, now every rissole has an unbudgable opinion you might as well go to a football match. Boring.

I'm getting to the point where I am bored of it. Can't wait until I can retire and sod off to some "Elysium" style gilded cage where I can just drink, game and fish with no worries.

So with the looming threat of Russia, north Korea, China, the ongoing war in Ukraine, the cost of living and general state of the UK, leaving Europe, global warming and the threat of ocean currents shutting down and also talk of pandemics, does it not seem like our way of life is going to change in our lifetimes in such a way we can't imagine, or have people felt like this through most of time?

Because it sure doesn't feel like we're on a nice prosperous path forward does it? But we do like to continue as if nothing is happening, plodding on through life, eating chocolate and buying stuff.

how many of these threads do we need? This perpetuates the doom and gloom.

Merged threads.

I’ve gone the opposite way and just ignore it all as much as possible, avoiding social media and the news. Nothing I do will make a difference and all our leaders are the same.
Agreed. It makes such a difference to YOUR daily life when you remove yourself from it.

You want change, start in your sphere of influence .... otherwise just switch off.

There's saying it and then living it.

A few names in this thread are regular posters in political threads on issues, so it seems to me they're not really ignoring it all. This forum is a form of social media and there are heated political arguments and debates pretty much every day.

Anyone who uses the internet every day and has a social life can't just ignore it all. It's no wonder the country is in the state it's in if that's the majority attitude to our problems. To say that all politicians are the same is just lazy.

It's like we've just sleepwalked into this state we're in with an attitude us Brits can't seem to shift. It's almost nihilistic and is a dream for the likes of our current government.

Going by recent history, the breaking pointing for some of our users was turning off the GD post count.

If that's the levels we're dealing with, I'm concerned.
first they came for our posts......then they came for, something else but i'm not too sure of what. i will be angry though when they come for that (whatever it is) too. :p

Maybe - but throwing some orange powder at a Cricket match or going on strike is not going to change any of those things. As mere plebs we are almost totally powerless to change world issues (as probably are our politicians also) - so whats left - work yourself into a frenzy about things you cant change (looking at you Just Stop Oil) or just ignore it and carry on "eating chocolate and buying stuff" until the world ends ? I know which I choose.

I think British people in general including myself are a bit of a pushover and will take generations for that mentality to change or when it is too late.

I am the son of a career soldier so I am very much a rules and wait your turn sort of guy. Do well, get your head down, be kind and you will be rewarded. I will whinge and moan about issues to make myself feel better but I will not do anything to change it unless it effects me directly in my sphere of influence.
