Where's all the good space games?

sins of a solar empire with the star trek mod is excellent :)

gets a tiny bit boring after a while but it takes a while especially when you play as the Borg. Great fun when you warp into a system with a cube fleet - zoom in and hear them going - we are the borg resistance is futile!

Do you have a link for this ? Sound interesting :)

Been waiting for this, for ages. I hope it comes out. But I think it will be canned or by the time it does. It'll have no support or anything. Hope I wrong.

Until then will have to wait for x4.

He is selling the engine so a release from someone else using the tech is likely think he was at this E3.

There's the Elite type game Evochron Legends.

Probably not to the OP's taste but worth mentioning in a thread like this I think.

No looks quite good, I like space games where it's a bit sandbox. Want to be a pirate? Go shoot some ships, want to build an empire? Build an empire etc.

Been getting stuck back into Sins with the expansions after starting this. Currently playing a massive map skirmish and got embroiled in a battle early on which is still playing out. He'll attack me and I'll destroy his ships and vice versa, mind you my 2 capitals are levelling fast and can now kick ass in short order :D

Keep sending the pirates to him as well, snigger.

I'd highly recommend AI War: Fleet Command, you have to put a few hours in to get used to the mechanics but it's excellent, massive and just eats time!

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident is good if you've not played it yet.

I have this but I just don't get the damage model.

I can literally sit there all day with a battle going nowhere because my weapons are doing ZERO to the enemy and vice-versa... a prime example in the 'Den' ship in the 6th or 7th mission.

I've tried attacking a specific part, tried a missile to take out the shields etc but same result - no damage, no kill, endless skirting around each other in space.

Hmm, mission six is a scanning mission and mission seven is an escort. Do you mean the carrier from mission 7 or do you mean the first mechanoid from mission 15?

If you're using weapons that do no shield damage you won't be able to damage a shielded ship until you kill its shield equipment with precision lasers.

Looks like i've missed a lot of epicness but can't be bothered going back to old games now.
No ones said Spore yet, boring up to the space stage but worth it, great space game play.

The amount of ships you can control is staggering in this game, sadly I was terrible at it due to my mentality of trying to amass fleets and taking over each system which drew down the wrath of the AI.

I still play the multiplayer only Sub Space Continuum occasionally. I'm in Extreme Games most of the time but it's fairly HC ie 1 hit kill/deaths.

Selective strikes and capturing key locations/resources are required, you can't just bulldoze your way through and amass a large fleet because the AI will react with an either bigger one.

It's good because it forces you to be strategic unlike every other 'RTS' where you can turtle and roll over the AI with an overwhelming force.

That said towards the end of the game fleets get truly massive with tens of thousands of ships in play.

They defo need to make a new Freespace, I've never played any game like that before, thought it was amazing back in the day...if they made a new Freespace game now that was as good as the olds one am sure that game would dominate that genre at release because I dont think theres anything else out on the market?

I never got in to X3, tried about an hour, perhaps it's because I have no joystick or gamepad?

no one has mentioned OOLITE yet.

WHHHYYYY???!!111!

Its a freeware fan remake of Elite with massive support. If you are interested I have made a little package for you...

1. Download Oolite from here and install.

2. Download my Addons from here, then unzip my file and put the contents of the AddOns.zip into the AddOns folder.

3. Then go here and download Griff ships. Unzip it and put it in AddOns.

4. Then put the save file RedsterCobraIII into the OOlite/oolite.app/oolite-saves folder. You will then start with a sort of decent Cobra MkIII complete with docking computers and Military laser/shield.

5. Finally, go here and grab System Redux and also add the contents to AddOns.

6. Start the game and when asked to load commander press Y then Load Redster.

Good to go. Elite on a stick. Loving it. Why don't we have more recent games like this? By the way theres loads of other add ons you can use to tune the game to your requirements here. I have included a re skinned Imperial Courier by Yours truly in the original zip. Head to a tech 7+ system and its yours. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I am doing right now, if you have a joystick with a twist stick or an Xbox controller it's excellent...
