Where's all the HDR games?

So HDR is the new big thing that we've been sold by TV manufacturers for the past 18 months and games on Xbox S already support HDR. Playstation 4 even got an update a few months back and the PS4 Pro is also HDR ready.

Nvidia have been on record as stating that the Maxwell 2 and Pascal GPU's fully support HDR and that they were actively working with the 'Rise of the Tomb Raider' developers to implement it:

Already Xbox S has a raft of games that support HDR, including:

Forza Horizon 3
Gears of War 4
Battlefield 1
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

All of these games are also available on PC, so why don't they support HDR? I know there aren't any HDR monitors yet, but many PC gamers use their 4k/UHD HDR enabled TV's for gaming.

So what's going on and when can we expect HDR to trickle down to PC games?

Only the newest 4k TV's support HDR so I would expect monitors to implement it soon. The XB1S does it well however the PS4's HDR "update" has been getting some mixed reviews and side by side comparisons have shown the Xbox does it better. MS are not sure how Sony managed to include it via an update I would wager its not true HDR
 
I need to catch up on this tech, as right now I've no idea why or how a TV/monitor supports HDR.

Ppersonally,I love it and its more important than 4k. For me HD is all about the colour and HDR makes for some very bright whites and very dark darks

I'm not talking about 'HDR lighting' in the video options of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and stuff like that.

I mean true HDR video mode, applied to games.

I hate monitors. There is always something just around the corner or just out of my price range that always keeps me from pulling the trigger on a new one.
 
When monitors come out will be supported.
However that's long way away. And given the upcoming price of the c34f791 monitor, rather buy an oled TV. It would be relative cheaper.
 
don't forget a lot of TV's are just "HDR ready" which is like when HD came count and you had loads of 720P tv's sold as HD ready. It just means the TV can handle the signal.

I saw a cracking deal on a £1000 HDR 4k TV the other day until I saw from reviews that it wasnt a HDR TV at all, just HDR ready. They really shouldnt be allowed to put HDR on a TV unless it is a proper HDR tv when they just mean its compatible. Lucklily there is the new Ultra HD Premium certified sticker which at least means you are getting a "true" HDR tv. Interestly enough ony a few HDR 4k screens sold in 2015 (the top end ones) would pass for getting this certification.

The number of "true" HDR tvs sold is pretty small I would imagine. By whether its a game console or PC, if you are running a HDR game outputted to a HDR ready TV, it wont look any different to a none HDR game.

Only HDR certified screens sold in 2016 are pretty much the genuine article (high end from 2015 excluded) so I imagine thats still a small pool

We need Microsoft to natively support it within Windows before we do anything. Relying on individual implementations by GPU vendors is not the way forward for something like this.

And I'm interested to see what the first HDR monitors will be like. Will they be full UHD Alliance Premium certified displays? Or just some amalgamation of the messy and confusing HDR10 'standard' with specs all over the place, with none of the manufacturers offering up CLEAR and available info on exactly what sort of HDR capabilities it really has?

Hopefully CES has some really good consumer examples to show off. Done with the promise and the prototypes. Make it happen.

Bang on mate. That whole "HD ready" thing really wound me up back in the day as well as I know plenty people bought one thinking it was something it wasnt

My U2711 is 10bit... so yay, I have HDR!

What I've seen of HDR (not in the flesh mind you) is that it makes the contrast look darker and you lose detail in darker areas in favour of the picture popping more. At lot of the examples out there are simulated and not real-world comparisons.

It doesnt interest as and neither does 4k. Seems we're running out of gimmicks to sell.

HDR can mean quite a lot of things at the moment.

For instance, we've had 10 bit monitor panels for quite a while now, some of them capable of doing near enough 100% DCI-P3 color spectrum, which should be good enough to earn a display the checkbox of 'wide color gamut', but there's definitely more to it than that in the bigger picture.

You could get technical and say that HDR on a literal level just means high contrast. But that doesn't really outline what kind of contrast we're talking about. The whole reason that the UHD Alliance wants 1000 nits to be minimum max brightness is because this provides that sort of incredibly high contrast with traditional LCD technology that cant get super low at the darkness end. Which is why they've made an exception to OLED displays and say they only require something like 500 or whatever nits to provide a similar level of contrast since they can go full black on that lower end of the spectrum.

These two things are probably the most important aspects. UHD Alliance is also throwing in '4k' as a requirement though, which is somewhat understandable as 1080p's days are numbered. No use spending all the money to create these high end specs and then stick a non-4k resolution panel in there.
