Where's my extra space?

Hi,

I have a 120GB Vertex 2 SSD and space is constantly an issue for me meaning i have to keep an eye on what's installed to the drive. I have Windows 7, a few programmes, Steam/Origin on it and use a 1TB HDD to keep music, movie and other files on. I've had a quick tot up and there's about 12.5GB of space that i can't account for. Total available space in shows as 107GB, am i right in thinking the missing 13Gb is to do with trim? That's not the missing part anyway, having shown hidden files and counting up there's still the missing 12.5Gb from the 107Gb total.

Anyone have any idea where the extra space might be?

Your SSD is measured in Gigabytes (2^9 bytes).

Windows actually measures in Gibibytes (2^30 bytes) but confusingly it's also called Gigabytes.

Your 120 Gigabyte drive is only 111.76 Gibibytes.

That accounts for most of the difference, I don't know about the last 4-5GB (binary) as measured by Windows.

I don't think the page file will show up in a simple tot up of the files.

However, total disk space should show up as ~111.6GB (I think windows reserves a 100MB partition on SSDs, check disk management). Something weird happening there. Well all my SSDs had the correct GB to GiB conversion.

Very strange. It's definitely always been 107Gb. I remember wondering why i didn't get the full 120GB at the time and thinking 10% was a lot to lose so thanks for the explanation/information.

4Gb isn't much space to lose i guess but i'd still be interested in finding out why it isn't available. Can anyone give me any pointers as to what it could be?

It's 107 GiB instead of 111 GiB because OCZ lied to customers. The Vertex 2 120 GB SSDs started as 120 GB = 111 GiB. At some point they moved to 25 nm flash and the actual available capacity was reduced by 5 GB. So now they are 115 GB = 107 GiB.

For some reason they never changed the packaging or marketing to reflect the fact that the drives were no longer 120 GB and a lot of people have complained since. They provided various explanations but that is irrelevant - they are not 120 GB any more and should not be advertised as such.
