Wheres todays best bang for the bucks?

I'm struggling with this question myself, I'd love something a bit faster (than my 3060ti) and have money put aside that I'd be happy to spend on an upgrade, but it's a hard choice...

- 4070 is overpriced and I can't spend that much on something with only 12GB/192bit, at £450-500 I might bite, or 16GB/256 at £550
- 6950 seems the best value, but last gen tech and a bit weak on RT and encoding (I make videos sometimes, but happy to CPU encode for the most part, at least on the 5950X!)
£580 for the ASrock is a great price, but it's a bit of an uggo :P adding £50 for the Devil shifts the value proposition a bit (although admittedly either that or the nitro/toxic are the best in class)
- 7900XT also seems ok, would be great at under £700....the only thing stopping me really is the multi monitor/video power usage, as I spend 10-50x more time watching videos on my TV via PC as I do gaming....and using an extra 75-90w (on top of <20w with my current card) is too much for me to bare!

If they solved the multi-mon/video power usage I'd pretty much buy one now, ideally I was hoping for the 7800xt to come in as the people's champion :P (at around £500-550, 70CU and 16GB/256), but it seems now that is either a long way away or they just won't bother....

@Devlish to answer your original question, if you're happy with considering it a stopgap until next gen (or 2), and depending on what the rest of your specs (inc. resolution) are and what you want to play...What @The_Arbiter suggested (RX6600) may be a good shout...maybe! (looking at reviews it looks like a 45-50% boost at 1080p, which for <£200 is not to be sniffed at)

But really depends on res and the rest of your system (and if the money is better spent elsewhere), until GPUs get a little more compelling of an upgrade

The MBA looks the best.

I'm not sure about the RTX 7900 XT, AMD doesn't seem to be able to produce very many.

Seems like quite a powerful GPU, but the cost per frame is still a bit too high at 1440p/4K.

The official price of the reference model is still £790, maybe worth keeping an eye on:

But the prices haven't changed all that much (MSRP was originally $899).

Does anyone know AMD solved the problems with >100 degrees Celsius hotspots on the RX 7900 XT reference model?

7900XT or 6950? I watercool so reference is always a plus point! I notice the 7900XT Sapphire has gone up £10 since yesterday, wouldn't consider the powercolor because of the 1yr warranty....
Sorry, was referring to the 6950 XT, on pre-order. You could scour the MM on a deal too for a 3090 maybe.

6800 is tempting me a little bit. I only have a 450W Seasonic PSU but with some undervolting and FPS caps I think I could get away with it. Since I am using a 5800X3D with a -30 PBO offset CPU power use is pretty low.

6950XT is probably better but I would need a new PSU and then the combined cost is not worth it.

If you just game and don't need/want the Nvidia options like DLSS, CUDA etc go for the 6800. If not try to get a "cheap" 4070.

Banged and ****** is the more appropriate term for buying a new GPU nowadays.

If I absolutely had to buy a brand new GPU today, then outside of going for the top end cards that have some value, it would be a 4070.

It's a tricky one because the 1070TI is actually still pretty relative to the current crop of cards, taking Gibbo's suggestions and using 3dMark performance as a measuring stick should help you make an informed decision.
For me i'm looking for double performance when i upgrade so from the 1070TI you need to look to at least the 6700XT for something that's going to give you a really good inprovement.
The uplift per £ is showing you how many extra points you are getting per £ you spend, relative to your current card. It shows that the 6600 is a really cost inefficient upgrade and that 6950XT and 7900XT are the most cost efficient vs your current setup.

I personally wouldn’t consider any new Nvidia card right now and would recommend the used market instead.

For AMD it depends what your after and the longevity you want, a 7900XT £750 if you want a big upgrade that’ll last years or for a cheaper see you through to next gen then a £280 6700 non XT seems pretty solid and will give you a sizeable boost of around +80% for £150 net cost after selling your 1070ti.

How much time do you spend playing 3dmark

After a lot of (over)thinking, I decided to agree with reviewers.

4070 FE is the best value right now for me personally:
  • Currently I have 5600x + 3060 Ti FE (non-LHR) + 650w PSU in ITX case;
  • Resolution is 1440p, 144Hz;
  • I would prefer to stay with nVidia;
  • I want to play Diablo 4;
Assuming eBay selling price of £300 for 3060 Ti and Diablo 4 price of £60, the total upgrade cost is: 590 - 300 - 60 = £230

What do I get for this money?
  • +50% raw performance uplift;
  • +50% raw VRAM capacity uplift;
  • +3 years of warranty;
  • DLSS 3;
In my view, 3060 Ti is generally sufficient at this moment for 1440p, but I expect the situation to get worse.

12Gb VRAM should be sufficient until the next generation of consoles comes up, plus 1 year. I would definitely prefer 16Gb VRAM, but it's not available in this price / performance range. If I go with higher-end GPU, I'll have to upgrade my CPU and PSU as well, which is not feasible.

Also, I highly doubt that we'll see games which are terrible at 12Gb, but having no problems at 16Gb. If game is poorly optimized, 16Gb won't really save us.

---

Now, let's talk about macro situation. As you might have noticed, we have 3 ongoing situations on our hands:
  1. Stagflation in western economies (and especially in the UK), which is unlikely to get any better in the next 3-5 years;
  2. The possibility of conflict in Taiwan, which grows day-by-day;
  3. nVidia and AMD focusing on AI and server-grade hardware;
I see very high probability that the next generation of GPU's will be even more expensive in nominal terms. Also, it may come out much later than anticipated.

So..
  • 8Gb VRAM is definitely on the low-end now, upgrade is a sensible idea;
  • 4080 and 4090 are too expensive and will require to upgrade other components;
  • 4060 Ti and lower cards make no sense;
  • the final choice is between 4070 and 4070 Ti, and 4070 looks more reasonable from price perspective;
We may see some discounts be the end of year, but I doubt it will be more than £100. May as well buy now with £60 discount and enjoy better performance now.

We may see new GPUs with 16Gb VRAM, something like 4070 SUPER, but it's very unlikely to happen this year, and it will likely be even more expensive.
