After failing at luchtime to bag the Special offer on the 2TB, I find myself with little room left on my server and some money to spend ! So what to go for in that price range ?

Samsung 1.5TB or Seagate 1.5TB

I have always gone with Seagate, mainly for the 5 years warranty, but also because I have had Maxtors and Western Digital fail on me in the past.

My last Samsung drive was a 40 MB in my 386SX with 2MB of RAM !! :D

It's to go in my server and to be used for streaming to a Western Digital TV Live box. So I am leaning towards the Samsung as it will switch itself off when not in use.

Any suggestions from the HD Forum ?

Thanks

Just thaught i would say, i got the seagate 1.5tb when it was first released and it has been a good hard drive. Cool running and silent (is only used for storage).

Given the choice now though, i would probably go for the samsung due to the excellent RMA service if anything goes wrong with the drive.

I have two of the Samsung 1.5TB drives, and the 1TB F3, and also F1's.

The 1.5TB drives are quite slow by todays standards therefore if you feel you may ever intend to use the drive as your boot drive, buy a different drive.

But solely for storage it is a great drive and a definite buy over the Seagate.

TBH however it would be my second choice for a storage drive, as the first would be a Western Digital Green Power.

But for a boot drive, no question either a SSD or an Spinpoint F3

Depends. The Seagate performs very similarly to the F1 1TB drives Samsung produced, so that's a clear choice if performance matters. If it doesn't then the Samsung is worth a look (cheaper, less power, quieter - being 5400). Reliability I'm staying well clear of Samsung after the huge mass failure debacle of the F1s.

Citation needed :p What mass failure debacle are you referring to?
I am not allowed to state the name of the seller however. Check an online store who's name ends with buyer. The comments on page 10-11-12-13-14 mention nothing but failures, every single comment. Further I know someone who consistantly had 3 F1s fail in 2 months (who bought from yet another different store) - This is what caused me to look into it (I was looking for a new drive), finding those comments and then finding similar comments on other sites. Not touching those with a 10 ft barge pole!

To add on the failure argument.

I have owned a 750GB Samsung F1 - Perfect.
3 x 1TB F1s - All Perfect.
1 x 1TB F3 - Perfect
2 x 1.5TB - one of them after just over a month of ownership had a serious problem and needed to be RMA'd to a competitor store where on testing they found a fault with the drive and are in the process of sending out a replacement to me.

So out of owning a whole bunch of Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, Toshiba, Hitatchi and Samsung drives.

This is the only drive I have ever needed to RMA. And am annoyed as return postage for the drive was not cheap.

So does this mean as like the quoted above *buyer forum post, I can say Samsungs are good or poor drives? As every other Samsung drive I have owned has been fantastic and wiped the floor in terms of performance of ever other drive I own.

2 x 250GB's Samsung - still going strong.
1 x 500GB Samsung - Fine
2 x 750GB Samsung - Perfect
2 x 1.5TB Samsung - Fine.

Second 1.5TB arrived yesterday, more than happy with them for storage.

Regarding mass failures, occasionally there are just bad batches. Therefore if a retailer gets a bad batch, there will be a 'wave' of negative comments.

That's why if I'm buying more than one for a RAID set, I'll buy different ones from different retailers to spread the risk of getting a bad batch.
