Which 20" widescreen display?

Agghhh!!!! After all my previous twitterings on 24"/22" advantages I think I'm going down the 20" route!! The 24" is just to expensive and I've been persuaded by the "same resolution for only a 2" gain (with MAYBE a perceptible sharpness issue) argument to finally go for a 20" model.

I THINK from my research the two most recommended at the moment are the Dell 2007WFP and the Viewsonic VX2025wm - with maybe a Samsung and NEC in there to spice things up occasionally.

So - the age old question, been asked 1000 times I'm sure, but in the simplest possible terms, what would be YOUR preference from the above (or another I've forgotten if you think it's superior) and WHY do you prefer this one?

Budget is about £300 max.

Cheers.

I've got the Dell 2007WFP myself and think it's great, but then again I haven't used any of the other 20" widescreens so I couldn't say how it compares.

The two screens you've listed both have quality panels though (IPS in the Dell, MVA in the Viewsonic) and I personally think that's the way to go, rather than the cheaper TN panels with their limited viewing angles. Having owned two TN panel screens in the past I couldn't get on with them because of the viewing angles.

The NEC is a top screen (IPS panel), probably a smidgen better than the Dell and Viewsonic, if you have that sort of budget.

I chose the Dell since the NEC was too expensive for me, and I'd read a few too many reports of backlight bleed on the Viewsonic. I also think the Dell may be a touch quicker than the Viewsonic. Ignore the 16 ms Dell rating btw, it's 8 ms GTG, and it's much faster than the two other 8 ms screens I've owned.

I was just about to make a very similar post.
I'm trying to decide between the dell 2007WFP and the samsung sm-226bw.
My budget is also £300 tops.

It won't be long till you get to read more post's on here about the samsung 226bw, i would wait for more "real" reviews, so far from one person there is no ghosting on games, thats a sure thing with 2ms g2g.

i own a vx 2025 and a friend has the dell 2007wfp,image wise theyre both great but the dell has got a lot more connections ie svideo, composite, whereas the 2025 has dvi and vga only

i have the viewsonic and it is joy to behold. I went from a daul 17" TFT setup to this and it was well worth the upgrade. Everything just looks so much better and the styling to me was a major thing as I have always loved the styling of the vx series.

I'm contemplating getting another, once I have my new rig purchased.

Once again, I'm really grateful for all the advice and support here on the forum.

You'll be pleased to hear that I've finally stopped dithering and taken the plunge and ordered a VX2025 - but it really was a close one with the Dell2007.

I think I was put off the NEC as it was a tad dearer, but also because of the "you'll either love the glossy screen or hate it" reviews. I have no experience of either glossy or matt LCD (coming straight from a CRT) but thought I'd prefer the matt screen.

So..... it has yet to arrive and I am yet to see it in action, but would any of you VX2025 owners out there have any tips for optimal colour/brightness/contrast settings when I set it up? I know this will largely be a matter of taste, but I'm sure there may be some obvious things to tweak that will improve the "out of the box" settings that would be agreeable to virtually everyone.

I'm looking at the Samsung 226 and the Dell 2007 aswell, at the moment leaning towards the Dell, due to connections and that it's tried and tested. Will wait to see what the reviews are like for the Samsung as won't be looking to buy until this time next month.

i bought a 20" a week ago i guess now, maybe two, i ended up saving the money and going with the E207 dell and i've been nothing but impressed, haven't had time to play many games but haven't had any issues at all with it. for £205 can't really go wrong ;) have had a go with cs:s, errm, gta:sa(was bored so reinstalled it) but as i've built a new comp i haven't got much installed, haven't had any issues with those games though.

i too wanted a 24" but couldn't afford it and the 22" just seems pointless being same resolution. the only other models i considered were the normal 2007 dell, NEC but was too expensive though i've had a couple from them over the years and they do somehow seem to get amazing performance out of their models, and considered waiting for the high contrast models to become available.

did the samsung 2000:1 constrast screen come out yet, positive reviews, great screen or marketing over hype and little real world difference?

Dad just got a Dell 2007 WFP today and by god it's a beauty, almost in the same league as my NEC. I'd rather cut my hands off than buy a 22" TN panel over one of those, it's like comparing a Skoda and a Ferrari. The panel quality on the Dell is fantastic.
this post by richdog in another thread convinced me to go for the dell 2007.

i am trying to weigh up if there is any point getting a new screen or not, i have 2 iiyama 17" at the moment, the 431 series. one with the 8ms screen and one with the 16ms screen. both run at 1280x1024 and im just wondering if getting a 20" widescreen or maybe the 19" vx922 is really worth it.

Todge - as I still haven't laid eyes on my new screen yet, I can only really regurgitate things I haveb gleaned from my studies on these forums and elsewhere....

Your max. resultion when shifting to a 20" would rise to 1680 X 1050 (higher than you have now) and the issue of "to-widescreen-or-not-to-widescreen" (particularly at 20" and above as 19" WS was severely dissed somewhere I seem to recall) seems to be a resounding "definitely go for it" whether your predilection is for gaming, movies, or both.

Ergo, "is it worth it" = Yup.

One more point - the 19" vx922 would still be maxed out at 1280x1024 so I would say that option is maybe not worth upgrading to from your current display/s.

well i too took the plunge and just ordered my VX2025. £253 ex postage. sweeet

thanks for the advice guys, i think i may keep my 8ms 17" as havign 2 screens can be quite handy for photoshop or max work. we shall see :)
