I am speccing a new machine and monitor and will go for a 34 inch ultra wide 3440x1440

It seems that there is greater choice of freesync rather than g-sync

That may dictate I go vega rather than Nvidia

It will be a ryzen build.

Which monitor would people recommend for fee sync and which for g-sync (if any)? I would like to spend around £600 ideally but could go higher, but don't really want to go much over £750

Will be used for work all day and then gaming.

What about any of these? How much difference does the refresh rate make? I am coming from a 24 inch dell i have had for yonks 1920x1200 i think

Many thanks

I have the Samsung and it's a good monitor.

Main reason to choose it was I wanted VA and 100hz. The quantum dot backlight is also a plus as it helps the colours match up to ips.

Shame about the lack of gsync though.

I had the Samsung C34F791 and whilst it had some good qualities its shortcomings became more apparent to me when I had it setup on my new desk which could then support the Samsung and the BenQ 1440p IPS designer monitor....

....the three years old BenQ above was naturally more bright and vivid than the Samsung without needing to "boost" the Samsung to try and bring it to those levels.
for a £750 monitor I was not overly impressed with its build quality. It did seem rather flimsy, this might also be due to the BenQ being a VERY solid build.
The joystick control at the rear of the Samsung wasn't that easy to access, I prefer the controls on the front and bottom bezel, but that is a personal thing.
At the point where the power lead and monitor DP leads connect (on the left at the rear) the monitor started leaning to the left. The stand is feeble and not very sturdy. It also can't be tightened.
Fitting of an arm is silly as it requires a VESA mounting plate to attach to the arm, which is already loose....

When I got the VA Samsung up and running the first thing that I noticed was how less vibrant and accurate the colour production was compared to the BenQ IPS screen. The BenQ also has no BLB and I can't see any glow. Using the Samsung pre-set modes to boost the colours is useful but it comes with a price of also boosting the sharpness (which is then greyed out and you can't adjust it) this makes reading text in Windows very difficult. I could never get the same vivid and uniform accurate colours of the BenQ reproduced on the Samsung to my level of satisfaction.
When you first get the monitor the brightness is set way too high, at around 80 or more, it needs to go to around 30 for viewing comfort. At 80 there was some evidence of BLB at the bottom but that was not apparent at the lower levels.

I was happy enough with the 21:9 aspect ratio, great vertical height at 1440p. Games looked good and it was an immersive experience.

Windows use tho was not good. The acute curvature of the monitor (1880R) was very distracting and the bevel effect made working with photos or other applications too distracting and difficult for me.

I have an old 2409 Dell 24" monitor to now compliment my BenQ whilst I still decide what to go for next.

I might consider another UW at 1440p but it would need to have an IPS panel, I'll just join the lottery. Also the curvature must not be as acute as the Samsung, indeed I would consider a flt screen if that was possible.

Many people enthuse about the Samsung but for me I just did not like it much and that became more apparent when I placed my BenQ next to it and also the Samsung started to tilt to the left (noted in other peoples posts elsewhere).
All panel types have their limitations and qualities but I do not think that a VA panel would be my choice again if the Samsung example is anything to go by.

Good luck

^^^ hee hee you now have another Samsung buddy :D

Fingers crossed that you get a good one, hopefully I'll be back one day at UW :)

Have an x34a. Ok but didn't knock me off my chair. That combined with it's taken me 6 months to get the retailer to agree to a refund (1st repair failed, won't go past 60hz, dp drops out).

Decided to take advantage of the Acer Halloween sale and grabbed a z35p with 10% off. Makes it the same as the x34a. Looking forward to seeing what the va panel is like.

Last monitor for me until OLED hits the mainstream monitor market, the upcoming 4k 144hz is too small imo so this should suffice for a while!

Yeah, we really need oled monitors. LCD is old tech now and has serious limitations no matter what panel type or backlight.

Oled isn't really suited to desktop use though :( Maybe they can find a way round the problems of burn in.

@IvanDobskey I understand what you mean regarding OLED but I am sat in front of a BenQ 1440p IPS monitor bought in October 2014 and it is built like a tank. There is no BLB nor IPS glow that I can see. Its colour uniformity and vividness is pretty damn good. Who knows if that was typical of what BenQ produce, I have read that they and NEC do tend to build pretty solid monitors.
I just get the impression that the manufacturing and quality control seems to have got worse as time has passed. Not that I would wish for things to get more expensive but I would not mind a small price hike if it meant better and more consistent production. I returned two AOC Q2770PQU monitors in a row, they were absolutely terrible with BLB, excessive IPS glow and the screen uniformity was horrendous, before I got a keeper with the BenQ.

@jubei I did notice some black crush with the Samsung VA panel UW monitor, again that was comparing it with the BenQ IPS to find detail which the Samsung would lose in the blacks.
As for ghosting IvanDobskey did notice some, IIRC. I didn't much as I rarely play fast type games.

Having had an oled TV for two years just makes me pine for an oled monitor :(

Don't get me wrong, I like my Samsung ultrawide, but oled standard it isn't.
