Looking to purchase a 3D TV, I've held off for a few months because I wanted to wait for the 3D TV's which require no glasses but after doing a bit of research I've found that they will come out next year and the prices will be insanely high.

I need a TV which has 3D upscaling and the only make that does that is Samsung as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong).

SAMSUNG LE46C750 46 inch 3D LCD TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview HD - 300,000:1- £769.94 including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

SAMSUNG UE40C8000 40 inch 3D LED TV 1080p HD Ready - £879.94 including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

SAMSUNG UE40D6530 40 inch 3D LED TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview HD - £923.94 including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

SAMSUNG UE46D6100 46 inch 3D LED TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview HD £989.94 including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

Now does LED make a big difference to the picture quality? I know that it has a much higher contrast ratio than LCD, the screens are lighter, thinner and use less power.

What does Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio mean?

Would love some advice/tips and suggestions please, cheers!

Panasonic do 3D upscaling to, tbh when buying 3D id 100% buy plasma as lcd/led gives to much cross talk and I find headaches to, where as plasma is naturally faster and smoother.

Have a look around as someone on here got an Panasonic txp42gt20 at a bargain price.

Ah right, didn't know that! After reading a little more into it, it seems that Panasonic offer a better 3D upscaling experience compared to Samsung..

I've found:

Panasonic TXP42ST30 42" HD 1080P 3D Plasma with Freeview HD - including 5 Year Tv Guarantee- £989.94
Panasonic TXP42GT30 42" HD 1080P 3D Plasma with Freeview HD & Freesat HD - including 5 Year Tv Guarantee - £1044.94
Panasonic TXP50VT20B 50" HD 1080P 3D Plasma with Freeview HD & Freesat HD and two pairs of 3D glasses- including 5 Year Tv Guarantee - £1319.94
Panasonic TXP42VT30 42" HD 1080P 3D Plasma with Freeview HD & Freesat HD and two pairs of 3D glasses - including 5 Year Tv Guarantee - £1539.94

Can't really decide which one to go for, can anyone explain the difference between GT/ST/VT?

Any other models which are good from Samsung and Panasonic?

St is the entry range, not to bad either but you need to buy glasses.

the gt is the model up, has a small frame, freeview and freesat Hd, and is thx certified for 2D and 3D, it's slimmer to and getting some really good reviews, again you need to buy glasses.

The Vt is the top model, can be calibrated via the Internet with a special tool(not cheap tho) has the same features as the gt but a better filter again, and it comes with 2 pairs of glasses and the wifi dongle, it also has a one piece glass screen which is nice but makes it heavy, the 55 weighs 55kg.

Panasonic TXP42GT30 42" HD 1080P 3D Plasma with Freeview HD & Freesat HD - including 5 Year Tv Guarantee - £1044.94

can be found for £959 with 5 yr guarantee and less than £900 with a 1 - year guarantee though i dont recommend that.

the newest GT30 and VT30 Panny Plasmas are thecurrent 3DTV's.

I would personally buy the biggest screen you can afford, I find I look back on my 42 inch Panny and wish I had gotten the 50. I guess its down to the size of the room though.

The Panasonic TV's are hands down the best for PQ and 3D so you can't really go wrong with one of those, now I have calibrated mine properly it looks awesome :D

VT5020b gets my vote.

go and have a look at them, you will find that people say the leds have to much cross talk but the new lg models are fantastic at 3D better than a lot of plasmas and thats the passive models, panasonic are good but they use active and i have active and it does show flicker in the glasses and i cant stand having them on now i.e headaches, passive is the way to go IMO quality and no headaches with them, plus only a few quid a pair of glasses

Which LG models are those? I was wondering why some 3D glasses are £50 and others are £100.

So you're saying passive 3D TV's have less flicker than active TV's? And that the LG LED's are better than plasma's?

My budget has increased to around £1300 now but I would like to get 4 pairs of 3D glasses with the TV.

LED vs Plasma
Active vs Passive
LG vs Panasonic

Would like some more information/help please, this is a tough choice.

Also, how on earth do I know which TV's are active and which are passive?

I'm leaning towards a plasma from reading a lot of articles/reviews on 3D. I think 46 inches would be perfect.

So which are the best TV's for 2D-3D upscaling (when watching normal films, tv, dvd's ect) and general viewing?

the LG LW550T 3D LED is passive and doesnt flicker at all, glasses are £2 a pair while the active sets glasses do flicker some see them some dont but price range from £50 upto over £100,
and i would head over to AV.FORUMS and check out some reviews and get a good insight to what you may want

Thanks for that suggestion, I've looked into it and that TV seems awesome, especially for the price.

I think I've narrowed it down too:

LG 47LW550T 47 inch 3D LED TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview HD - £1264.94 Price including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

Panasonic TXP42GT30 42 inch 3D Plasma TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview HD freesat HD - £1044.94 Price including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

Samsung PS51D6900 51 inch 3D Plasma TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview HD - £1209.94 Price including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

Samsung UE46D6530 46 inch 3D LED TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview HD - £1209.94 Price including 5 Year Tv Guarantee

The LG is passive, the Panasonics are active..but are plasma so won't have the flicker/ghosting with the 3D.

So now I've got to somehow narrow it down to one TV!, anymore advice please?

The LG also has 90ms of input lag in Game mode and nigh in 150ms in the other modes so beware if gaming. However there is no flicker or crosstalk using a Passive system.

I'm not too fussed about that to be honest. I really can't decide between those TV's lol, this is annoying me!

Samsung PS51D6900 has low lag input for gaming, is plasma so a high refresh rate to almost reduce ghosting to zero & probably the best 2D-3D conversion but the TV's are active which means expensive glasses and is not as good as passive for 3D (viewing angles ect)

LG is passive which is better for 3D and has Cinema 3D to improve the quality but has high input lag and doesn't have the best 2D-3D conversion from what I've read. But that's down to personal opinion. LED so better colours, lighter and thinner.

The Panasonic TXP42GT30 has good 2D-3D conversion, but it's active = expensive glasses and not as effective as passive for 3D viewing. Almost no input lag aswell.

I'm leaning towards the LG, the only downside is the input lag and the conversion isn't as good as Samsung/Panasonic.

Where did you get the Active is not as good for 3D as passive from ? Active is miles better than passive, which is why the 3 major players in TV use it, you get FULL HD 3D not 1920x540 3D so it gives more depth and the viewing angles are fine, with any panasonic you can be sat anywhere you can see the screen.

The samsung Drange should work anywhere within the blutooth signal to.

read this. http://news.consumerreports.org/electronics/2011/05/first-look-lgs-first-passive-3d-tv.html

Passive is great on a budget, or for large familys, if you want Great 3D images tho, at FULL hd active is the way forward.

I've read on AV forums that passive is better because of less headaches, viewing angles and no ghosting/flickering. And the majority of people don't notice the drop in resolution with passive 3D.

So you're saying I should opt for an active 3D plasma TV? that's what I originally looked into buying until I was told about the LG.

There are 4 of us in the house that will use the TV, that's almost £400 for glasses alone for Panasonic., that's far too expensive. I would also need an extra 2/3 for when my friends come over or family, 7 pairs would cost me almost £700, as much as the TV. But the Samsung 3D glasses are £50 which is ok I guess although still expensive.

Passive is a lot better for that reason. Plus the LG is good at 2D-3D conversion and the screen is LG LED which means a more vibrant picture but obviously has the high input lag due to it being LED.

LG 47LW550T vs Panasonic TXP42GT30 vs Samsung PS51D6900.

Anymore opinons please?

A few people have said that Panasonic has the best 3D technology but the glasses are really expensive. Samsung seems to tick all the boxes though. LG ticks all the boxes too but has high input lag and the 3D quality might not be as good as active TV's.

Passive also has the disadvantage if you try lay down or off angle in some way it will start getting darker the image... Try it with your glasses next to the screen and hold them sideways you will see the image goes black... Just hold the glasses by one of the arms and the glasses vertically and you will see what I mean.. Active shutters dont have this problem.. Active is the best 3d performance there is right now... if you want the best 3D.. But you know what ? all 3D in all its current forms is rubbish to me thats why I only invest in a good 2d screen.. Untill they make 3D that requires no glasses and does full 1080p or higher.. and no angle watching issues I dont want them to say you have to sit in a sweet spot.. it means it does not work ...

Samsung glasses are probably the cheapest tbh at around £50, the new ones are also Blu tooth not IR so you don't need worry about issues of people walking past the sender interrupting the signal.

The only time i can notice the flicker is when the battery's are running low, or you have Florescent lighting on, including energy savers, as they flicker at a frequency close to the shutters.

you dont have to watch 3D when people come to visit, the tellys will also downscale 3D-2D for normal viewing. You need to go into a store and have a good look at all the options tbh then decide which is best for your situation.

If i was buying, it would be active as ive seen both tech's and passive just doesn't cut it, And it would 100% be Plasma .

yes make sure you go and look at them fist mate,p.s the lg also gives you £200 of if your with sky but make sure you check them out first,
