Which 7970 to choose

I am looking to get a 7970 very soon (today or tomorrow).

Its just that I am a bit stuck at to which one I want.

I don't really have a budget as such but I don't want to overspend if its not needed....

The MSI Lightning as its on sale this week only was pretty much what I was set on. However with the Asus Platinum on sale today only I'm a bit unsure as to which is the better choice?

I am also a bit unsure at to whether these cards are worth £80 more than a "standard" 7970?

Any help would be great :p

Thanks in advance!

As you don't want to over spend I would recommend a 7950 at a saving of over £100 and it performs within 5% of a same clock speed 7970.

Bargain :).

If you can afford it, get a Lightning, they're great cards. Is it worth it over cheaper non reference 7970's? I'm not sure, but I love mine and wouldn't swap it for anything else right now.

Which 7950 would you recommend? I have noticed a lot of people making this recomendation over a 7970!

I've been waiting a long time to play The Witcher 2 with all the bells and whistles, I assume a 7950 can run this with all the Ultra settings? What about Far Cry 3 also?

Cheers guys.

Neither a 7950 or 7970 can run witcher 2 with uber sampling on at a decent frame rate. You can max everything else ok at 1080p but would need two of them if you want uber sampling enabled. Tbh I can't actually see any difference with it on or off.

The 7970 is not worth the extra over a 7950 there is such little difference you will not notice ingame. Clock the 7950 up a bit and they are near enough identical.

Ah yeh, I didn’t mean with Ubersampling on, that would just be madness :p Ultra everything without ubersampling would be fine.

You certainly make a good case for the 7950....I just don't want to be sitting here in few months needing to upgrade again :)

As the gap is only 5% - 84 FPS instead of 80 FPS or 60 FPS instead of 57 FPS - the difference between the 7950 and 7970 is never going to be the difference between playable and unplayable. Can put the money saved towards your next upgrade or a second 7950 as and when time dictates :)

I got one of these on sale for £320 or £330 on here, (cant remember which) and it's AWESOME.

I had to buy a new case for it though as it is 314mm long (never mind eh), and seeing as I had a 22" at 1680x1050 I thought I'd better get a 24" 1900x1200 to make it worth my while. Then seeing as I was paying for the postage I thought I may aswell get a 128GB Samsung SSD. It was an expensive decision.....

I have bad coil whine in the Crysis loading screen, but other than that it's a beast. Currently running at 1075/1600.

Don't think I can push it any further though.

Have to recommend the Gigabyte WF3 7950, great card, quiet and cool and Oclocks past a 7970 easily. If getting be sure u get the GV-R795WF3-3GD model and not this new model GV-R795UD-3GD which I suspect has lower quality components and locked voltage, dont know this for sure though.:)

I think its going to have to be a 7950 I'm afraid chaps. The money saved would be nice, could go on an SSD :).

Performance difference between the 2 isnt huge!

My 7950 clocked at 1100/1600 gets 1311 on heaven max settings 1080p test. My 7970 at 1200/1600 gets 1374. I cannot see any difference ingame at all between the two on anything.

7950 and an SSD would be a good choice if you ask me..
