Which 7970 ?

Well i think they're both voltage locked at 1.25v so either could potentially clock well. It depends on the luck of the draw as to how much voltage they actually require to run at stock clocks and that comes down to asic which you won't know until you order the card. Statistically the 7970 will improve your chances of getting a better clocker, but it still comes down to luck of the draw.

One other thing to consider, the 7950 has lower brand memory so the 7970 will clock better on that front.

I didn't know the his was locked?

I know the sapphire cards aren't,or any of the msi

I hope this doesn't come back to bite me in the ass but im 99% sure the HIS 7970 OCUK sell is the cheaper version and is voltage locked at 1.25v.

Interesting, the core clock says 925mhz on ocuk website. That must be wrong surely? It has to be voltage locked. The fact its on original reference 7970 clocks is interesting. Mistake on ocuk's part??

Interesting. Well I will see if someone can varify if its voltage unlocked, will probably go for it if it is, otherwise its back to the drawing board. Maybe 2 x 7950 but then my 650w PSU comes into play, damn, this upgrade lark is begining to cost lol

If you are sticking with a single monitor I would go single 7970 an OC it ... I have 2 7970's and I have to say one OC'd is more than enough for single monitor gaming IMO as I'm not looking for the fastest system in the world :) just decent frames and games that look good.

This is all I am looking for. I want to see the best gfx that games can offer, I don't benchmark etc.
I want to ram the settings up to max and not get stuttering or lag. Thanks for that info though anthony, eyefinity is a possibility but not for a good while yet.

The HIS is on offer ATM and looks to get some really good customer feedback and people are over clocking them .... Give OC a call in the morning and ask them to confirm if it's the reference board ( I think it is ) and if its locked ( it seems to be unlocked ) also get and idea of what water cooling is around for this card ... I will go water cooled at some point on my whole system but sticking with the H80i on the CPU and the fans on the gpu's for now.

Not sure what case you have but get positive air pressure into your case from multiple slow large low noise fans if you can this will help with you gpu/CPU temperature.

My case is the Coolermaster Haf 922. Its got plenty of air passing through, 1 x 200mm fan firing through from the front, 1 x 200mm at top pulling out, 1x 120mm pulling out from the back and 1 x 120mm side fan pushing air into the motherboard area, with the 2 x 120mm fans on the Noctua CPU cooler and the one on my Radeon 6870 there are a lot of fans lol.
To be honest, I have set my Trixx software like Stulid set the HIS software (in his review of his 7970) so that the fan speed goes up as the load comes and on stock settings my 8350 hits around 32° and my 6870 hits around 53° (fan around 65% @ this temp) playing BF3 for as long as I like, give or take.

If I were to go with the HIS 7970, it only has 1 x DVI (doesn't say if its the dual DVI) but I will need another DVI connector for my 2nd monitor, whats the best option for this, a MDP to DVI?

idk if they come with a hdmi to dvi adaptor,i think my powercolor one came with a display port to hdmi

My Samsung S23A700D has 1 x HDMI, its running on the Dual DVi socket on my 6870 now to be able to run @ 120Hz, I am assuming if I use the Hdmi it will still run @ 120 Hz?

Looking on the HIS website its saying the DVi port on the card is Dual link, but not on the OCUK website, also has anyone else got any more info about if the HIS 7970 on offer has unlocked voltage?
Going to buy tonight if its unlocked.

I would have gone for the Sapphire as I could use both my monitors without getting an extra cable, but it seems there is only 2 cards that fit the bill right now, the Gigabyte and the HIS :)
