hi. i had the system in my sig. i think the boards died.so i have an asus z97 pro wifi coming. i decided to do away with the 2 corsair force 3 raid0 os drives and get a 250gb single ssd. i went with the samsung 850 evo 250gb drive but i ordered the msata version which the new board won't support. so it's going back. now which drive would you go for and why. i like new spec stuff and have'nt followed ssd development over the last 2 years. so whats a great drive?

my new board does have an m.2 slot but i think it utilises 2 of the pcie lanes if enabled. so is it worth going for an m.2 drive?

850 Evo/Pro are good, Crucial MX100/BX100 are also good, I would take one of the Crucial drives. Also SK Hynix are decent. All standard SATA drives.

it will be my os drive and for 250gb i'm looking at paying up to £100

As roadie says not much difference between most SSDs in realworld.

Been playing with a bunch lately aside from the corsairs (just never get around to those for some reason) and the Kingston HyperX 3K and SK HyniX have been pretty decent and my favourites currently, Intel are usually a fairly safe bet but not so cost effective at the moment and without any real additional features to justify the cost.

EDIT: Would love to be able to recommend the evos as when they work they have nice features, etc. but after the hassle I've had with the 840 EVO I'd struggle to recommend them kind of on principle.

what about the reported problems about the tlc nand on the evos?

I thought that was an 840 issue, Is it an 850 issue as well then? The 850 is the first 3D Vertical-NAND (V-NAND) SSD, I was under the impression it was different and not prone to the issue you mentioned.
