Which AV Amp????

Got skirting boards? YES
run it around the top and staple it in. That would mean taking the right one up and around the door frame and the left one around the fireplace some how????

Or with laminating there should be a gap under the skirting board to allow the laminating to expand, maybe able to fit it in there. No Gap, only 2/3mm

i dont know if this will be of any use but the sony can be set up so to use only the two front speakers, there is also a2ch/A.direct option on the remote which according to the manual "standard 2 channel stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing and multi channel formats are downmixed to 2 channels except lfe signals"

is that good for stereo sounds?

Some people are having problems with getting sound over HDMI when plugged into an A/V amp (shows up as a DVI device). Don't know if this has been fixed with CCC8.12, there is a EDID hacking thread over at AVS forums.

I think you are going to be pretty disappointed with that cheap Sony compared to your NAD if you're sticking with 2 channel.

Most decent subs can take a high level input so can be added to a 2 channel amp easily if you wanted to add one. That's where my money would go if I was staying with 2 channel rather than on a cheap AV amp.

To be honest with you at the moment, because the sound goes out from tv into the amp i notice hiss, a lot of it. It gets worse if i turn it up. Very noticeable on my HTPC. Is this because the sound the TV is outputting to the amp is bad?

It's always going to be worse from the HTPC. PC's are terrible for interference. I don't quite get why you have it running through the telly anyway, can't you just send the sound straight to the amp?

amp has phono inputs and my devices have HDMI. The only way is via a DAC

Plugged my PC in via optical co-ax into my Yamaha rx2600 receiver and it sounds great (got 4 monitor audio ceiling speakers). Not using a dedicated sound card just the motherboard (Shuttle SP32v2).
Running the video is a pain because I can't go PC->AMP->TV as the AMP will only pass a digital signal to the TV via HDMI and i'm using component out of the PC.

I'm a little confused now.

Would the AV amp not be better for movies/bluray AS the source is plugged directly into the amp (even if it is only a 2.1 set up)?
Meaning therefore the amp gets the sound as it is and passes it to the speakers RATHER than going from Source -> TV -> Amp (my current setup)?
Would this not result in the sound being better quality as its getting a unaltered digital signal?

I know a stereo amp is better for music but i havent got any CD players/Radio feeding into it and will not have in the future either.

The Denon AVR 1909 hasn't got very good reviews for the price bracket its in.

the Denons are outgunned at every price point by Onkyo/Yamaha/Arcam

I think im going to pop into richer sounds tomorrow and get the SONY STR-DG820 Amp. They have got it on for £229.99.

AND will i notice an improvement over my NAD C325BEE stereo amp?

My setup only includes 2 front speakers - no surround sound

why are you after an AV amp with no surrounds/centre/SW etc you can run stereo from your PS3 into your NAD and the same with the HTPC.

the DG820 will be a step down stereo wise from your NAD

P.S. why is anything audio related going through your TV??? you're starting to scare me.

My setup is:-
SKY HD->AMP->TV using HDMI
DVD->AMP->TV using the same HDMI as above.
Nice only having one cable going to the TV and all the rest is hidden behind the AMP.

Nothing wrong with that and easy to do.

Anywhere sinsable you could run it around the fireplace. Maybe follow the edge around the floor.

Do you own your house?

What's the point of having a decent tv with blu-ray and not having surround sound. If you own your house run them properly. if your renting just run them around the edge.

I think what the OP is currently doing is connecting his PS3 and PC to the TV via HDMI, then 2 phono's from the TV out to the NAD input.

Its a tricky one, if you really don't listen to music at all through you setup then I would say you would get better sound from a AV amp. as you will be getting the nice dynamic digital audio rather than what will be a standard stereo feed by the time it exits your TV. Granted it will only be through output through 2 channels. But unless im mistaken the extra dynamic headroom should make for a much more exiting listen.

Most amp's allow you to run configure a 'phantom' center speaker, where the amp will use the front 2 speakers together to generate a virtual center speaker.

Sorry for the back track, I just read your posts again, and it seems you dont use it for CDs much at all.

so just to clarify, if its for gaming and films GO FOR THE AV AMP

if its for music NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it will sound worse than your NAD. :)

under any circumstance running sound through the TV first will sound decidedly worse than straight to the amp, i just don't understand why anyone would hook their gear up this way......the analog stage from the TV is going to be crap.

both the HTPC and PS3 can do all the processing and run analog straight to the NAD, soundcard/onboard on the HTPC and the PS3 must have some phono outs that could be used ........no wonder he's looking to upgrade it must sound totally pap as it is.

Well guys i went and did it. Got it from Richer Sounds for £229.99 and they done the 5yr warranty for £23 so i think i got a good deal.

Anyway, SKY and Virgin sound a lot better!
BluRay sounds amazing!! Sound is clear and the individual sounds are now more distinguishable.

BUT, i've ran into a problem. I've got my HTPC hooked up to it via HDMI and im getting picture at 1080p but no sound. The amp also says the feed into it is "analogue".

Can anyone help?

What is this EDID Hack?
And do you have a link to the thread at AVF?

You need to tell windows to send the sound over hdmi. Probably under sound in control panel. But not entirely sure.

In the sound control panel its set to "Realtek HDA HDMI Out"
Its also set to the same in the realtek control panel.

There is only 2 options to choose from; "Realtek HDA HDMI Out" and "Realtek HDA Audio output". Tried both and still get no sound :(

I cant understand why it isnt working anymore? It was working perfectly last night when the HTPC was plugged directly into my TV via HDMI. Its only since i plugged it into the amp that i no longer get sound!
