yeah. all upscaling does it rendering 1440p back onto 1080p . worth checking out. really basically like adding a load of filters to make game look better and taxing the GPU. as you may have a large screen and sat close, it'll help smooth out rough edges etc

more common now in games to set monitor resolution and then in-game resolution

Yeah Modern Warfare has an option for this anyway seems to improve Res of things in distance
