Hi dudes,

I'd like to stick an nvidia card into my machine to enable physx for the upcoming Mafia 2 game, was looking for some advice on which card would do the job. I know a lot of folk aren't fussed for physx but I think this game would really benefit from being able to use the physx features.

Budget is approx £100 (will this be enough for a card capable of running physx smoothly?????)

My system (core components):

cpu: i7 920 @ 3.6ghz
mobo: Asus P6TD deluxe Mobo
gfx: 5870 Vapor-x 1Gb
ram: 4gb corsair domintor
psu: corsair hx850

If you are looking to get a dedicated GPU for PhysX you might want to wait for the midrange Nvidia cards that will be coming out soon based on GF106. The older cards are fine for PhysX as Rroff said, but they can still put out a lot of heat and use quite a bit of power.

Sell your 5870 and put all your cash towards a GTX 480. This way you wont have to mess with hacked drivers and you will get a boost in all your other games. :)

was actually considering selling 5870 and going 480gtx route but the 5870 vapor-x is just such a good card I dont want to part with it yet...plus the noise of the current 480's is an issue for me. I wouldnt care about the heat or higher power consumption, but definitely the noise of the things!!!

PhysX is NOT worth £100.

In your opinion  Jesus kyle I don't think eyefinitys worth 3 x £150 (£450) minimum for 3 monitors, not to mention a couple of 5870s (£600) to run it all, but you don't see me banging on about it in every other thread.

Well yes, in my opinion, I thought that was obvious? Either way, this is a thread about PhysX, not Eyefinity, so while you're entitled to your opinion, your opinion on Eyefinity isn't really relavant to my opinion on PhysX in a thread about PhysX.

You don't appear to need much of an excuse to slate anything Nvidia related though, if you could just step out of Kyles world for a couple of minutes you'd understand and realise how much of an ATi fanboy you come across as on these forums :p

You've been a stout ATi supporter for as long as you've been on these forums (2900XT?), so how can you possibly know if PhysX is worth it or not?

Like I asked in the mafia 2 first impression thread but you failed to answer, what was the last title you played with PhysX implemented properly on?

So I can't dislike PhysX now without you claiming I'm a fanboy of ATi? How many times do I have to tell you I disliked it when it was owned by Ageia? You're the one going on about Eyefinity, or, let's call it surround gaming, like it's an ATi only thing, and the only reason I like it, is because of ATi...

I called you out on this and you apologised over it, in the same thread, you would criticise anyone who didn't like PhysX unless they had an nVidia graphics card, when they had an nVidia graphics card, it was just their "opinion". For some one who claims to dislike people being biased, you really aren't bothered unless they share a different opinion to you, but don't have nVidia hardware. Again, for some one who doesn't like people being biased, you're the one mentioning ATi first.

If there was no such thing as Eyefinity, I'd still have 3 monitors, because I have a use for 3 monitors, nothing to do with ATi. As for "stout ATi supporter" again, how many times do you need to be told? I don't "like" ATi, I dislike nVidia, ATi are the only alterantive, if there were other alternatives, you wouldn't be able to use the fanboy label so easily.

As for the last game I played with PhysX, it was Mirror's edge, but what does that have to do with anything? Do I have to have an nVidia graphics card and play games with PhysX to be able to hold an opinion about PhysX? According to your logic, you can't complain about eyefinity because you don't have an "eyefinity set up". There are PLENTY of videos on youtube demonstrating PhysX effects, if I had nVidia GPU, they'd be the EXACT SAME effects I'd be seeing, so why can't I base an opinion off that? Again, I don't know how many times you need to be told this, I thought PhysX was rubbish BEFORE it was owned by nVidia. If it was owned by ATi, and was being used in the same way, it'd still be rubbish.

As for £450 minimum, and £600 minimum for graphics cards, whut? You need to get over thinking surround gaming is an ATi exclusive thing. nVidia can do it too...

As for your pricing numbers, what happened to all those £100 monitors? Aren't 5850s sold any more? Last time I checked you didn't need monitors of a certain price and 2 5870s to run 3 monitors.

As I've said about my own, I would have 3 monitors regardless of "Eyefinity", I have a use for them completely unrelated to games.

Does disliking Kellogg's Cereal make me a Nestle fanboy? Does disliking Coke make me a Pepsi fanboy? Why do you find it so offensive that I don't like nVidia? There's more than enough reasons to dislike them, do you hold shares or something?
