Which card for PhysX

I have a spare Nvidia 7950GT - would this be good enough to run physx?

PhysX was first implemented with 8*00 series so you couldn't even run PhysX on it.

I though GeForce 9600GSO/240 were a sweetspot with their 96 processors. This is the only thing that counts for PhysX, right? The latter can be had for £60 from here, I bought an OEM GeForce 9600GSO 384MB for £30 of the bay a year ago or so.

If you look at the recommended specs for Mafia 2 it is stating to max out the physx they recommend a 285gtx. I really dont know how worth while a 8800gt will be and how long it will last as a decent physx card.

lol the mafia 2 specs are fail.

They seem about right to me. I get around 40% gpu load on one of my highly overclocked 480's if I use it as a physx card. If more games start coming out with high requirements for physx then a 8800gt would just be a waste of money. I am also assuming the OP is looking for a physx card for Mafia 2.

Maybe someone with a 8800gt could confirm the gpu load on max physx settings in Mafia 2.

Well I'm not going to judge any physx performance on the joke that is mafia 2.

At a guess thats what the OP is buying a physx card for. It would be pointless them buying an 8800gt and not being able to run physx maxed out. I dont think they would be best pleased, I know I wouldn't.

I would say to be on the safe side go for a physx card with the power of a 260gtx.

Does the memory matter? Have a 256mb 8800GT I was thinking about messing about with.
Also have a 1gb 9800GT but in my mind, that is blatant overkill.

Hi dudes,

I'd like to stick an nvidia card into my machine to enable physx for the upcoming Mafia 2 game, was looking for some advice on which card would do the job. I know a lot of folk aren't fussed for physx but I think this game would really benefit from being able to use the physx features.

Budget is approx £100 (will this be enough for a card capable of running physx smoothly?????)

My system (core components):

cpu: i7 920 @ 3.6ghz
mobo: Asus P6TD deluxe Mobo
gfx: 5870 Vapor-x 1Gb
ram: 4gb corsair domintor
psu: corsair hx850

Seriously, you would be better spending the money on something a little more worthwhile. Maybe an SDD or quality sound card.

Please, a 285 is not required to do physx, it's scam, nuff said.

'Oh I could just buy myself a 480 and use my 285 for phys-x'

This. Mafia requirements are a joke. There's more PhysX effects in Batman and it won't max out 8800GT for PhysX effects only.

My 9800gt green uses up to 24% load for the benchmark.
My 5870 uses up to 70% (for about 3 secs then drops back to 58%) load for the benchmark.

Imo, Nvidia is telling porkies to cash in.

Big boost here on Mafia 2 using my 9800gtx+ clocked at 800/2000.

And you can pick them up for £35 2nd hand.
