Sony lost millions on waiting. Probably over a billion at a guess.
There wont be an Xbox3 anytime soon either. Which is my point. What is my point is that Sony will not allow Microsoft 12-18 months headstart again. They lost a fortune because of it.
Your forgetting the PS2 is still selling remarkably well. Most of the reason they lost profits was because Kutaragi wanted to make a crazy expensive piece of hardware with features that the majority of gamers did not need at the time. Something like only 20% of people in the whole of the USA owns an HDTV, it was worse when the PS3 launched and trying to justify the cost was too hard a task. Including Blu-Ray was probably a mistake as it raised the price far too much, but in the end I don't think it will hurt them as much as everyone thought.
Even if the Xbox 360 didn't exist and the PS3 was the only option in the market it still wouldn't have sold that much better. Obviously MS put pressure on Sony and MS they did extremely well launching early but Sony made a hash of it.
well i dont know numbers im afraid but im sure a large percentage, own or have access to one of the new generation of consoles. The guy who 'LOVES' his ps2 (i.e. his collection of games scares me) is always on one of our 360s. There are also some of those happy with their ps2 for the time being, i know a large bundle of people who picked up one or a gamecube in the last 12months due to price on ebay or shops
It's not really a large percentage, I don't have recent figures but it is still less than 50%. People are still making the jump, and people who already own a Wii who bought it for "hardcore" games are probably going to get a little bored and buy another console.
So there is still a massive amount of PS2 and Wii owners who want to buy a next gen console. In the next 2-3 years HDTV sales are going to go up so it's going to be even more likely for people to want a PS3 or 360. Now that the PS3 is picking up pace, and Microsoft are trying to reach out to that PS2 audience it makes things interesting.
As PSN becomes even more like Live while MS continues to charge £30-40, as Blu-Ray continues to beat HD DVD 2:1 in most sales and as more AAA games appear on the PS3 that PS2 owners are waiting for of course it looks more appealing in the long term.
Also, the Wii reaching out to the wider demographic. Are they really reaching to all these different people who didn't buy PS2s for Buzz, Singstar, Guitar Hero etc. The reason the PS2 sells so well at the end of its cycle is because its cheap, the Wii started cheap so it reached out to the same audience. Maybe it reaches out to more soccermoms, I don't know.
How well it does when the PS3 and 360 drop in price will be interesting because their third party support isn't there. Average Joe wants to play Madden or FIFA on a next gen console than the Wii because it's more fun.
The main reason I posted was to justify say that the PS3 is more appealing long term, but then that's just my opinion
I hate these posts, I always get caught in them with crazy long answers
