Which console?

I am finally looking to replace my Playstation 2 with a new console but I'm not really sure which one to go for.

I bought an Xbox360 when they first came out but didn't really get on with it. I must admit I'm not much of a gamer to be honest, but when it first came out, there weren't many games that I liked the look of.

My girlfriend also had a Nintendo Wii but the games aren't brilliant for that so she sold it. We both mostly like racing games.

As I said, I'm not a huge gamer but I'm looking for something to play every now and again, so what would be my best option?

Obviously my options are Xbox360 or PS3. If the PS3, would you go for the older model or the new one?

Tons of better games have came out on the 360 since release, and they are so so cheap now that i would try it and see if you like it any better than before.

Xbox 360 if it's every now and again, get the cheapest SKU.

The games aren't different enough for a casual gamer to warrant the extra PS3 cost.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah, when I was looking round town today, I noticed you can get an Xbox360 for around half the price of the PS3. However, I'm concerned that I'll not be able to get use to the controllers. Also, are the games similarly priced between the 2 consoles?

On the other hand if you don't game much then you might not want the hassle of having to pay for live when you want some multiplayer...

All the usual advice applies - if you want blu-ray you have to get a ps3. Look at the exclusives and if any of them are important to you then get that console.

If you get the ps3 then just get the cheapest you can find as the hard drive won't make a difference to you.

Don't buy many DVD's really so Blu-rays are a long way off :)

Go with the 360, cheapest you can find. If its extremely casual, you may not even need the 360 with the hard drive and make do with the internal memory on the Arcades (or whatever they are called now).

Because some people like me think the exact opposite ;)

Citycm - You're not a DVD buff then, 360 seems the more sound option.

Nope, not a DVD buff. Don't get me wrong, I love watching films, I just refuse to pay full price when I know I'll probably only watch them once, so I tend to wait til they're in the £5 range :)

If you're both into racing games then it has to be the 360.

Forza 3, Dirt 2, Grid, NFS: Shift (although the latter is a bit hit and miss).

i went from ps2 to 360 and couldn't believe how much better the 360 pad is. the ps pad is truly shocking in comparison. im at a loss as to why they havent changed it yet:confused:
Also this. The only problem I've had with my pad is that I've worn the four little nipples off the left hand stick, but that's probably more a reflection of how much time I spend gaming as opposed to the quality of the pad :D

play and charge kit / cost of AA's
Live membership

are really the only things to consider against the X360 (or additional cost to put it another way)

Im glad I have both the Ps3 and an elite, but without needing BR the PS3 doesnt offer much for me in regards to exclusives for me (until whenever GT5 appears)

360 really offers everything a casual gamer needs unless there is a particular PS3 exclusive that you want. Both graphics and gameplay wise there isnt much between them really, ps3 has a technically superior media system for streaming locally saved fiiles such as stored on a networked PC but the 360 can be made to do this just as well with good 3rd party apps. Also if that last point sounded too technical then definately go for the 360 because the integration of online direct download movies and rentals is second to none and the upcoming addition of facebook and twitter aswell as Last.fm web radio intergration is streamlined for the tech-illiterate masses and will require little effort to use. On the pad front ill just say i was "THE" ps2 pad fan, loved it, never touched an XB1 and hated the wave controller design. Got a 360 out of next gen need/want at launch and given a few hours on PGR3 and Kameo i would honestly now say i could never go back, and i mean that to the extent that if you get a 360 and play for a month you will come back here and post about how wrong you were im certain of it!

Plus at the end of the day lets face it, £110 for a console like the 360 is a total bargain!

Purely from a price point of view: I would say the Xbox 360 is cheaper but only if you don't end up buying a lot of the extras that go with it. If you buy an arcade model and play the odd game (which sounds like what you want) then that's pretty cheap gaming. If you buy an arcade model and then buy a hard-drive, play and charge kit(s), a GOLD account so you can play online and a wireless net adaptor then it will probably cost more than a PS3. Even buying an Elite with just one year gold online is goint to be over £200.

Aside from that just buy which ever one your mates have, they are both really good.

Lets say you go middle of the road 360 60gb model at around £150 then add a second pad and a play and charge kit plus shop around for 12months live which can be had for 30 ish

thatll be about £220 give or take and includes everything you NEED for a full 360 experience (if 2 player gaming is required) and if you went without HDD for real casual gaming it could be had at around 180. Sure the wireless adapter is pricey if you need one (although there are cheaper alternatives to the official iirc) but running CAT5 is not impractical for most. Cant deny that the ps3 has a good allin package but on the other hand i would own one if they did a non wireless low memory cheap unit but they dont so i CBA getting one lol

I still think your PJ is begging for a PS3 + MKV's ;)
