Which console

Seriously why does this matter?

Is it really a big deal at the age of ten.

What do I know, maybe I'm still thinking back to when I was a kid and we never had the MP experience like we have now.

I'd think the opposite actually. Loved going to my mates to play on his Amiga while I loved my Spectrum, in my own way.

I suspect that it matters more now than it did to us, same platform offers yet another way of staying in constant contact with their friends which I think is quite important to kids these days (I don't have any kids so this is purely opinion). I remember the number of conversation me and my mates had 2 years ago about which console to get first, it was pretty much real life South Park console wars.

I suppose it doesn't really matter in terms of user friendliness, kids can operate iPad's from the age of 3 so navigating a console at the age of 10 isn't going to be an issue. XB1S and PS4 slim will have some decent deals I suspect in the next few weeks and black friday and cyber monday are almost upon us...

so they can barrow/lend games to each other?

Wii U can play most Wii games, in which there are hundreds, cheap. Makes sense.
true

I have a 10 year old and she has a wii u and loves it,can also be used to watch youtube on the controller which frees up my tv :)

You guys are living in the past :p Seriously though, gaming online with friends is where it's at now.

The same advice I gave to the guy who wanted a console for his 6 year old son: let your kid choose what games they want to play and then buy the console that has those games. Choose the games first, not the hardware.

I don't have a sister (to have grown up alongside) or a daughter, but I can say that of the girls I know who did play games growing up, it was often a PC or Nintendo platforms they used most. Partially because they then got addicted to that nonsense social network stuff they moved on to as teenagers. As far as I remember, every single of them had the handheld DS at some point. I will say that the 3DS is backwards compatible (there is a 2DS if concerned about unnecessary 3D or price) with DS games and has a large number of games aimed squarely at young girls (such as stuff with horses). Admittedly, IMO most of those games are trash. The Wii/WiiU was similar, though the girls I knew played more widely appealing games like Mario and whatnot. One of the girls, grew up with the earlier Playstation consoles (PS1 and maybe PS2) too. That's just people I've known, no idea whether it applies to OPs daughter.

Also keep in mind that the Nintendo Switch is releasing in March, though admittedly we know next to nothing about it (other than it's both handheld and can plug into a TV).

which console does your daughter want? ask her not us lol

xbox or PS there is really no major difference, except a few exclusive titles

Wii has fewer games and will be replaced by Switch, so can't recommend buying a new one. but maybe good deals for a second hand with some games

We had a Wiiu and daughter (8) only really played Mario Kart on it,she mostly plays Minecraft on the PS4 now.Have a look see at the games etc,she preferes the PS4 as well to the xbone due to the size in controllers, xbone ones are big and hurt after awhile

Speaking of Minecraft, it's on every platform now, even the WiiU (which shockingly didn't have it for the longest time). My cousin has the PS4, even though it had the latest games and stuff on it, his younger brother (probalby like 5 or 6 these days) was happy on a 2nd hand Xbox 360 with Minecraft, and then later, a PC with Minecraft. Quick reminder that even the weakest PC can run that game. I will also agree that PS4 controllers are more comfortable and suitable for smaller hands.

She is nearly 10. She has no idea!

She wanted a DS but only for one game!

Which game? Chances are that there could be similar things on other platforms too. You mentioned your kid likes Minecraft, but of course, 3DS is the only thing that doesn't have it. As mentioned above, you can run it on any sort of PC, even a bargain laptop. How about this... take her into a video game shop and tell her to look around and see what she likes. Get whatever console is in the area she hangs around in (unless she hangs around the area with non-video-game items).

What I fear, something I've seen often is that a parent buys their kid a games console, the kid will enjoy it initially and then forget about it and not use/play on it. Just make sure your kid will use it a lot, or else there's not much point. Unless you want to buy something for other reasons.

Guys, is an XBox a good buy for a 10 yr old? My daughter thinks her friend is getting one for christmas. Can she play minecraft on it?

It's available. Your daughters friends dad will no doubt be looking forward to playing the xbox more than his daughter. Wii U, Mario Kart good start. Try Mario Maker, better then Minecraft imo.

my 10 year old nephew spends all his allotted time playing minecraft and robolox on the xbox one, to the point that i just talked his dad through setting up a second console with family sharing so he can get back on Forza.

You don't want to be the dad sending them to bed early so you can get your Xbox fix.

Playing with there mates on Xbox live is good and the family controls allowing you to lock down there accounts to an appropriate level (only talk to approved friends, cant add friends without parental approval etc) make online as safe as it can be. don't think my 10 year old nephew needs to be told what half the internet has done to his mother.

Definitely PS4.

Some may suggest the Wii U but you would be buying into a dead console with limited number of games and nothing really to come. Nintendo have a new console coming next year and I think production of Wii U has already stopped, or stopping very shortly.
