Which Core 2 Duo ?

Wellllllll......Just ordered from OcUK.....went for the 6300 (Retail - fancied a nice cardboard box :p ) and the Geil 2x1GB RAM kit......wanted the P5WDH too, but - having spoken to a guy on the phone - they won't budge/pricematch and it is over £20 more here..... :( ....in fact, I believe it has even gone up onsite today by a tiny amount.... :confused:

Just get a E6600 and the ASUS P5W DH Deluxe clock that puppy to 3.8ghz like me :D

Problem solved.

Just out of interest easyrider, does your Asus power off when you save changes in the bios at high fsb speeds? Mine does above 320 MHz and hitting the reset button will also power down the system completlely at these speeds and above, although 3 seconds later it starts and implements the changes :confused:

Sorry for slightly hijacking the thread. :o

M'DS4 does that too. Except when I jack the FSB up too far without volts, and it just powers on/off/on/off etc

Mine powers off after a change then restarts,

....And the P5W DH is now also en route (and stumbled across a Ninja for under £30!)....should all arrive tomorrow.....busy weekend ahead, methinks !! ;)

Is there a decent thread dedicated to first steps in OC'ing these CPUs ? Long time on AMD and not sure where to start......although no doubt will find out.....just looking for pointers :rolleyes:

You wont go wrong with the 6300. I've got both a 6300 and a 6600, and if I was buying now, I'd just get the 6300.

TheAsgard did a nice o/c step by step method, although it was slightly DS4 centric.

:)

THe best deal at the moment is pairing the E6400 with an asus P5B-deluxe. THe asus board can reach up to 500fsb without mods so with good cooling you could hits some nice clocks.

For example:

450x8 = 3.6ghz
460x8 = 3.7ghz
470x8 = 3.8ghz (not 8.8ghz :S)

Get a a scythe ninja and some 'coollaboratory liquid metal paste', and some good ram like:

-2gb Gskill HZ
-Teamgroup xtreme DDr2 5300

.... and you will be flying. Plus the money saved could go towards other arts of the PC.

I have E6300 And DS3 board + the discussed Geil RAM from OCUK this week only.
Well impressed. can do 490X6 with no voltage increases except VDIMM +0.3
Currently testing 465X7 1.3375Vcore

The board will do 500 MHZ FSB with +.1 GMCH
Have only added a Zalman Nbridge cooler and 40mm fan

I think if your on a budget then its 6300 and you get a bargain. However I went for the E6600 and I couldnt be happier, honestly Im @ 3ghz and I have nt even touched any voltage, its rock stable and very fast.. got to be worth the extra cash in my view. :p

I know for a fact I could push this overclock a lot higher, but I wanted 3ghz before I bought it and Im happy with that. :)

Hey this is happening to me and my fsb is at 333mhz. Wonder why this happens?

Well I have both setups

6300 & DS4
6600 & P5W DH

I have had about 5x 6600 and one will do 3.6 at 1.46 volts and the rest do about 3.2 -3.4

I have had 3x 6300 and they all did over 3.3 with one doing 3.5+ and that OC was limited by the motherboard :eek:

The 6300 and DS4 is an amazing combo. Just get some decent ram and your sorted. I have used the Geil and it works well but you need 2.2 volts through it. I use G Skill HZ myself and I dont think you can beat it for the money.

Do as the poster before me says save the extra £100 and buy the 6300 and a ninja CPU cooler. :)
That's what I did, 3GHz so far and not even breaking a sweat. Wasn't even a real overclock attempt, just a half arsed "set it and see what happens" and it's rock solid, will easily get 3.5GHz out of it I think.

This review answered a lot of my questions have a look its an excellent read. http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2800&p=1

Yeah, good read.......thanks :)

Well, now got my shiny 6300, Geil 2*1GB pc6400 (thank-you This Week Only :D ) and P5WDH......put it all together and installed into my existing PC, removing X2, K8NXP-SLI and RAM and copious amounts of driver uninstalls from Windows.......and......BSOD - DOH ! Still, a boot from CD and repair seemed to fix it all nicely and my system is all back up and running with the new bits !

So, updated P5WDH BIOS from shipped 0701 to 0801 and manually set the RAM to pc6400 4-4-4-12, raising voltage to 2.1v as sticker on RAM says (is this necessary ????) and all seems fine ! ASUS remote not currently working except for turning PC on :confused: .....but otherwise fully functional PC - time to let the CPU overclock commence......will the stock hsf noticeably impact OC - i.e., should I put the Scythe Ninja on/keep the Gigabyte big blue thing I had on the X2/leave it with stock hsf ??? Thoughts, guys, please ?
