So far I have seen the following CPU's and I am keen on overclocking having just bought a Prolimatech Megahalems cooler. Maybe even invest in some W/C eventually. Which CPU would be the best to purchase out of the following.

Q6600 - usual prices, I guess £70-£100
QX6850 - around £160
Q9505 - around £130
Q9450 - around £150
Q9550 - around £150
Q8400 - £???
Q9705 - £180

My aim is to hit the 4GHz barrier :D:D, I'm guessing the QX6850/Q9505/Q9550 and Q9705 will do 4GHz but not sure about the others?? I will be using my ASUS P5Q-E P45 board and 4GB of OCZ Reaper 1066MHz HPC Edition RAM.

As you can see from my sig my current E6300 is running happily at 3.4ishGhz :)

I don't want to upgrade to i5/i7 as I have not long had my ASUS board and want to play with it a little first and see what Intel have on the horizon in the next year or so...

Cheers

Q9550 E0 if you want to get to 4GHz.

Q6600 G0 (~3.6-3.8GHz) if you want value for money.

I don't understand why the q6600 and q9550 still command such a high resale value when you can practically change socket for a close outlay if you sold all your gear.

I'd never pay more than £60 for a q6600 or £90 for a q9550 I'd rather swap to core i5 quad than pay £150 for an old tech q9550.

Only value at the moment is q6600 and try to pay as close to £70 as you can for one although there's been an influx of naive people paying £100 for them lately so don't get your hopes up.

Your right about prices, certain e-tailers who still have stock seem to be hiking prices, I've seen the Q9550 on certain sites for £250+

Also i7 920 still seems to be available for around the same price as a 2nd hand Q9550 if you look hard enough.

Its a shame would love to have a nice Q9705 but price fixing seems rife...

But going to i5 would'nt be much of a good choice either as the person would be in exactly the same boat as they are now with 775. 1156 is dead Q1 2011 and 1366 in Q3 2011. May as well just change the cpu and get the most out of what you have rather than going from one dead end socket to another.

Out of all those, the q6600 would be a great choice, albeit if you can pick up a proven clockable chip, q9550 is also a good choice but not at £150.00, about 6-7 months ago i sold a decent clocking q9550 (1.200 vid oem chip) for £120.00, should be a bit less than that now.

+1 for the q6600,for the price it really is an excellent chip, mines at 3.6,and load temps are 55C under a noctua cooler.

The price of second hand Q9550 is going up if anything but it's hardly suprising now that s775 is EOL.

A Q6600 G0 would be the best value for money, but if you want to hit 4GHz, then I would buy a Q9550 or Q9650.

What are the Q8xxx cpus like? If I could find one 2nd hand cheaper than a Q6600 would it be better? Seems like everyone skips over them so was wondering why? I put a q8400 into a mate's rig and had it up to 3.2 without even breaking a sweat (or raising volts very much at all) so it probably had loads of leg room. Are they worth a few quid?

Q8xxx CPUs have less cache and lower multipliers than the Q6600. I would take a Q6600 G0 over a Q8xxx.

Thanks for the views guys, keeping my eye out for a Q6600/QX6700 or Q9550 now :)

But it would be lovely to own a rare chip like the Q9705 :)...
