Spcr did a review of the ultra 120 vs ninja and ultra 120 came out on top just. The arctic isn't really in the same league, its a lot cheaper. Its common knowledge that its not as good as the ninja, there should be loads of reviews comparing thse two although i can't think of any off the top of my head.Big.Wayne said:

I nearly always buy a phat cOOler but this time I went for the ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro (I think I convinced myself it would be quieter than the INTEL retail jobby, as well as cooling better?) . .
The Ninja does look overpowering on the ASUS P5B Deluxe though!
If it was a beauty contest ninja would win hands down.
Your freezer 7 pro will cool better than the intel stock heatsink and it should be quieter.

Your freezer 7 pro will cool better than the intel stock heatsink and it should be quieter.

One thing is I never used a 'horizontal' HSF before, always 'vertical' i.e they have always blown the air downwards onto the CPU. I'm getting the distinct impression that 'horizontal' is better because all the new releases are like that?
kinda like the idea of the rear case fans assisting the 'horizontal' HSF in its task, also like the idea of using the rear case fan (via a ghetto shroud maybe?) as the main CPu fan (pulling air through the heatsink and straight out the back).
[edit] the one thing I question about the 'horizontal' design is does it work as well when u have a case with a blowhole in the side above the HSF?

The vertical design is better for cooling of motherboard components and the chipset, but not the cpu.
With a vertical design you are blowing the air round corner, and it has no direct exhaust, so airflow is nowhere near as good as with a horizontal heatsink.
The thing that made the different was heatpipes, or at least better and cheaper heatpipes, a hoizontal heatsink would be useless without them, but with them you don't have to blow the air onto the cpu anymore so you can have much less restricted airflow.
With a horizontal design having a blowhole above it doesn't really help.

I can wiggle both my memory modules out, thankfully. You couldn't fit the corsair ones with a big heat spreader in there though i don't think.
i've never really experimented much with just the rear fan, but because the heatsink is also open at the top and bottom i should imagine it works fine, just a little hotter.
I'm trying it now, i'll report back. The rear fan is on a very low rpm, temperature is 51 with the front fan at 90%, room temp is 25.5 degrees.
Edit: Cpu temp is now 54 and seems to be staying there.
